Gus Kenworthy Recalls His Coming Out Of The Closet Story Involving Miley Cyrus

Gus Kenworthy says bonding with Miley Cyrus was the wake-up call he needed!

The former Olympian recalled how it felt to be linked to the pop star and how getting what he wanted awakened his need to live in his truth and discover what was missing.

Apart from Gus Kenworthy,Miley Cyrus has been linked to several high-profile relationships in Hollywood, including a failed marriage to Liam Hemsworth and her current engagement to Maxx Morando, which was confirmed last December.

Before the former Olympic freestyle skier came out in 2015, he had secretly dated men and lived in the closet while attaching himself to women in public.

Relating his reality to some characters on "Heated Rivalry," Kenworthy likened himself to Scott Hunter in the movie, who was in a secret romantic relationship with a barista. In his words:

"I also had a secret relationship, with these clandestine meetings and hookups, and Miley Cyrus was my own Rose."

He continued that despite enjoying the newfound connection between himself and Cyrus, who is "successful and beautiful and talented," it is not the same as being with a guy.

Kenworthy expressed to The New Yorker during the interview that, like Hunter on the show, he also bore a yearning to be in love, very publicly and not have to hide. However, several circumstances surrounding him at the time did not make it an easy decision, so he kept operating in secrecy.

Recalling the moment he name-dropped Cyrus as his celebrity crush, Kenworthy revealed that it was the day before Valentine's Day at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and the reporters asked who his dream date was, after which he responded to Cyrus.

"And all these people tweeted it out. Neither of those girls responded to those guys, but Miley tweeted at me and followed me. It was surreal for a number of reasons, but I was also digging myself this deeper and deeper hole," the star shared.

Kenworthy revealed that they exchanged some flirty texting after the Olympic episode, but it got to a point where he decided it was enough, and he wanted to be truthful.

Since watching the show, the Olympian has found himself touched to the point of texting the creator and admitting that he never thought he could watch his life be analyzed in parallels.

The talented vocalist emerged on the Hollywood dating scene with Nick Jonas and then went on to date Justin Gaston, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Cody Simpson.

By 2009, PEOPLE noted that the singer confirmed that she was dating her "The Last Song" co-star, Liam Hemsworth, a few days after they finished filming.

The duo dated on and off for three years until Hemsworth popped the question in 2012, and an elated Cyrus expressed that she could not wait to spend the rest of her life with the actor.

A year later, things ended between the duo, but in 2016, they reconnected and shocked the world with a marriage in 2018 at their home in Tennessee.

Unfortunately, their marriage lasted for just seven months, after which they decided it was best to focus on their careers, and by 2020, their divorce was finalized.

During their split between 2013 and 2016, Cyrus briefly dated Victoria's Secret model, Stella Maxwell. While they never confirmed their relationship, they were spotted exchanging a kiss on the singer's music video set in July 2015.

Fast forward to 2021, the star was linked with Morando, who is the drummer for the band "Lily." Aside from their romantic connection as intending future partners, Cyrus and the drummer have collaborated professionally, with him producing two songs on her 2023 album and writing the track title for the "Something Beautiful" album.

Speaking about their relationship last year, Cyrus declared: "I ended up with a person who means a lot to me and treats me really well and respects me. I had to find someone who treats me with respect ... My man's hot as hell too. But my man also respects me."

Since coming out in 2015, Kenworthy has been romantically linked with Tyler Green, although it remained unconfirmed when they parted ways. Last February, he publicly wished his boyfriend, Andrew Rigby, a happy birthday alongside his dog, Birdie.

"Celebrating my sweetie babies who were BOTH born on February 22nd!. The two most kissable faces I've ever known... I actually can't handle how cute they both are," Kenworthy declared on Instagram as shared by JustJared.

While nothing is known about the moment the former Olympian and his boyfriend began dating, they did update the public with their first Instagram post in 2024 during a trip to New York in August. By September, they shared pictures of themselves attending Burning Man together.

In 2022, The Blast shared that Kenworthy will be skiing at the Beijing Olympics for the United Kingdom instead of the USA to honor his mother, Pip Kenworthy.

Describing how much it meant to him, Kenworthy referred to Pip as his number one fan, who supported him in several ways and also doubled as her best friend.

He revealed that his mother had always supported him and even showcased this when she waved the flag unapologetically during the period he came out as gay.

"She's just truly been so supportive of me, and I wanted to do this to honor her. I'm very excited to get to kind of pay tribute to her at my last Games," the athlete added.

Kenworthy noted that it would have meant so much to him that his mother saw him in person, but due to the pandemic, it would be best if she watched from home.
