Fans of CW’s Batwoman were shocked when Batwoman herself Ruby Rose dropped out of the show before season one even finished. The actor never gave a clear reason, she thanked her fans and left. Now, the Australian model is opening up about what led to her shocking departure. Spoiler alert… it was allergies. “Ask anyone that’s ever played a superhero or villain or anything with that kind of costume, [the costumes are] not fun,” she said during a press interview for the show. Yet she was willing to ride it out, playing Batwoman is kind of a sweet gig.
That Darn Costume
Unfortunately, it wasn’t only the lack of comfortability that affect the 34-year-old. “I did find out that I was allergic to latex,” she said on KIIS The Kyle and Jackie O Show. Luck was not on Rose’s side because the most important part of her costume was made entirely of latex. “Unfortunately, my mask is latex. I was getting worse and worse, because as you get more contact with it, I guess you get more reactions.” The last straw was when she started to look ad feel like crap. “I took off the [mask] at the end, and my face was just hives. My throat was all messed up.”
She Didn’t Look Like A Model Anymore
She even noted that for a model, she was not a pretty sight to look at on set. “It was like it was out of a scary movie,” referring to how bad her hives got. Benadryl was her best friend for most of the time she was on set. So there you have it, the actress had to bow out because of an allergy. The role of Kate Kane was then taken over by Wallis Day. “Super excited to finally announce I’m joining the cast of Batwoman,” wrote the actress on Instagram. “I’m sure you can imagine how much this means to me and how incredible it’s been working on the show so far.”

The Show Survived
Javicia Leslie also poured herself into that costume to play Ryan Wilder, she is the first black actress to play the character. Rose made sure to congratulate both women on suiting up for the iconic role. She even publicly apologized to Day for not congratulating her sooner. “I’m sorry I didn’t congratulate Wallis Day yesterday,” she wrote. “I knew about the casting beforehand and didn’t know when [the episode] aired so I forgot to. But I’m stoked for her! I’m seeing all the things I’m tagged in, with people sad or wondering how I felt… I feel great, I have nothing but good vibes.”
