The 30-Year-Old Got Good Advice To Aid His Recovery From A Retired NFL Star

After his injury, Mahomes began to beat himself up as he felt that he let his team and fans down. He had the nine-month expected period of recovery for this type of injury, looking right at him, having to adjust to his new normal.

Mahomes said that he thought the injury was not severe initially, so he asked staff to put a brace on his knee so that he could finish the game, but an MRI showed that he had torn a ligament and needed surgery to repair the tear in his left ACL.

Mahomes revealed that, as challenging as the recovery process seemed, he was excited to begin the healing journey. According to PEOPLE, retired NFL star Tom Brady gave advice from his personal experience. He had torn his ACL as well in 2008 during the opening game of the season.

This seemed to be the secret to maximum performance post-injury, as Brady won four more Super Bowls after fully recovering in his time.

Like any good sportsman, Mahomes was not happy being unable to lead his team to victory. His injury also resulted in him sitting out the rest of the season.

His coach, Andy Reid, shared an update on his health, informing fans that although he's in a good place health wise, he feels like he "let people down."

The Blast reported that Mahomes himself also expressed his disappointment on social media, "Don't know why this had to happen. And not going to lie [it] hurts," he wrote.

The 30-year-old footballer drew comfort from his faith, adding, "But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again."

A torn ACL is not the first injury Mahomes is facing on the field. He also had a hand-wrist fracture in 2016, a head cranial concussion in 2021, and a pedal ankle sprain twice in 2023, amid other minor injuries.

In 2019, the Chiefs' quarterback dislocated his right patella during the second quarter of the game against the Denver Broncos. ESPN covered the story, reporting that he was to undergo an MRI to determine whether there was any ligament damage.

Medical staff attended to him immediately, popping the kneecap back into place before he was taken off the field. The injury was not severe as he was able to walk on his own, though with a limp.

MRIs showed mild damage to the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL), and he returned to practice in a week after undergoing physical therapy.
