In a new documentary titled "TMZ Investigates: The Reiner Murders: What Really Happened," which is set to air on Friday on FOX and Saturday on Hulu, the documentary analyzes Nick's situation before the killing.

According to information in the documentary, Nick was diagnosed in 2020 with schizoaffective disorder, which manifests in the form of delusions, hallucinations, and severe depression, among others.

Sources shared that Nick was stable on his initial meds to address the disorder before doctors decided to bump things up a notch. Insiders have claimed that there was no solid reason behind the decision, and the effects of the switch sent Nick into a spiral.

The producer's son reportedly became very agitated, erratic, and very dangerous, which set off alarms in his immediate environment, but they could not proffer an immediate solution to the challenge.

TMZ concluded that by the time the murder took place, Nick had already completely detached from reality, and doctors did not move to place him under a psychiatric hold or adjust the medications administered to him.

Experts have weighed in on the issue, attempting to give a detailed analysis of his actions and how fame may have contributed to his hectic life. Richard Taite, who founded Carrara Treatment, opined that Nick may have come under pressure from witnessing people before him achieve success.

The Blast noted that comparison of his success to that of those who preceded him may have brought him closer to his shortcomings. Nick's grandfather, Carl Reiner, was widely regarded as a national treasure with multiple awards as testimony to his iconic career as an actor, author, comedian, and director.

His father also made a name for himself as a highly successful producer and actor in the industry. These factors, according to Taite, may have pushed him to seek solace in the throes of substance abuse.

The 32-year-old's parents did not leave him to deal with his demons alone, as they reportedly did their best to help him by emptying their purse to pay for expensive rehab centers. Nick was, however, less interested in their efforts to save him and would often lie his way out of receiving help.

"At the end of the day, Nick didn't take the help seriously. This was true for years and years. His issues were far, far out of his parents' control," the source claimed.

In addition to this, he also reportedly used his compelling and intelligent ways to avoid accountability. The source added that his family deeply cared for him, and even though it was a scary situation for them, they never saw him as a monster.

The Filmwriter's Popular Defense Attorney Stepped Away From His Case

So many twists and turns have emerged in Nick's case, and perhaps the most intriguing one was the entry of the dogged Alan Jackson in the case, who knows his onions when it comes to playing defense.

Shocking for Nick and everyone else, The Blast shared that Alan stepped down from the case moments before his January 7 court appearance. Alan had expressed in court that his legal team had no choice but to step away from the case as he refused to shed more light on the issue.

Nick also waived his right to complete his arraignment on January 7, and his next appearance was scheduled for February 23. The 32-year-old will also now be represented by public defender Kimberly Greene pending the time he or his family secures another defense attorney to represent him.

The actor's son is currently detained at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles and was earlier placed on the suicide list as he was believed to pose a danger to himself, given his mental health issues.

Nick was reportedly made to wear a suicide prevention smock as soon as he was arrested and detained. Now he will no longer be made to wear the smock, as he now gets to wear the mandated yellow jail-issued shirt and blue trousers.

He will, however, not be released from High Observation Housing till a judge rules otherwise. Nick will also remain in solitary confinement and under strict surveillance as his case advances. Officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department shared that wardens often checked on him every 15 minutes.
