Travis Kelce may not be returning to the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2026 season.
The tight end has been dancing around the retirement question, keeping fans guessing as his words hint at a looming exit from the NFL. Although he has yet to give a clear answer, his recent statements lean towards a closed chapter instead of a new one.
Travis Kelce has been surrounded by retirement speculations for months, especially with the recent conclusion of his contract with the Chiefs. Additionally, his upcoming wedding to Taylor Swift is sure to keep him busy, but one teammate hopes he stays.
Travis Kelce Plays Coy About His Retirement Plans

Although Kelce is not ready to give a definite answer about his future in the NFL, he is certain that things have to fall in place before he considers signing another contract with the Chiefs. He shared his thoughts on the January 7 episode of the "New Heights" podcast.
When his co-host and older brother called him out for currently being "jobless" following the end of his contract with the Chiefs, Kelce agreed that the podcast was his only job. He then reflected on his team's disappointing season loss and the elephant in the room.
"It's a tough thing to navigate," Kelce said about his future in the NFL. "If my body can heal up and rest up and I feel confident I can give it another 18, 20, 21-week run, I think I would do it in a heartbeat," he added; however, he couldn't guarantee his return just yet.
The NFL Star Still Has Plenty Of Love For The Game, But Needs Some Distance

Kelce explained that the best way forward for him is "finding that answer and seeing how the body feels after this game when it all settles down." He revealed that at the end of each season, he enjoyed putting his feet up and "just be a human" to allow his body to recover.
"I've been putting my body through the wringer for the love of it. I do enjoy playing football and the physical aspect of it," Kelce admitted. Despite his fondness for the game, he stressed that he needs to be "a regular human for a couple weeks, maybe a month or so" to figure out what comes next for him.
The athlete continued fueling the retirement rumors by noting he had been in talks with "a few people in the facility" for "exit meetings." Kelce claimed these people knew his current stance about his future in the NFL, but did not share whether this was to quit or take a breather before returning.
The Kansas City Chiefs' Athlete's Teammate Begged Him For Another Year

Kelce reiterated that he needed a break to spend time with his loved ones and use the distance from the game to figure out his next plans. When his brother referenced his Chiefs teammate, Chris Jones, who believed Kelce had another year in him, he replied: "That's why we love Chris. He's very optimistic."
The Blast covered Jones' emotional plea for Kelce to stay for another season, noting that the defensive tackle told reporters that he hoped Kelce wouldn't quit. He prayed his teammate would put in "one more year" before considering retirement.
Jones raved about Kelce's importance to the Chiefs, claiming that he was a key part of their offense and someone he considered a brother. "We have just been through so much together," the media personality added, hoping it wasn't his last year with Kelce.
Sources Claimed The Podcaster Might Have His Sights Set On Hollywood

While Kelce remains on the fence about his future in the NFL, entertainment industry insiders say he may be the next big thing in television. The Blast reported that sources alleged many in the industry, such as Netflix, were ready to strike deals with Kelce.
One industry insider dubbed Kelce "a natural on television," gushing about his fun and vibrant personality. The insider believed the athlete could be as big as the Manning brothers if he worked with his older brother to present themselves as a package deal.
John Kosner, a sports media advisor, echoed similar sentiments, noting ESPN could collaborate with the Kelce Brothers. "They're even better together than they are separately," Kosner claimed. Another source added that Netflix's Bela Bajara might have been in talks with Travis's team.
Travis Kelce's Fiancée Called Out For Looking Displeased Following The Chiefs' Loss

The retirement rumors reignited days earlier after Kelce's team suffered a brutal defeat on Christmas Day, losing to the Denver Broncos. The Blast shared that Swift had attended the game to support her fiancé.
The "Fate Of Ophelia" singer went viral after she was captured on video looking sullen in her VIP box. Fans resonated with her feelings, believing she must have been disappointed watching her beau lose what might have been his final game.
Before the match, Kelce had told reporters that he was "still searching for those answers" when asked if this would be his final season with the Chiefs. He noted that his love for the game hadn't dwindled; however, he had to make the right decision for himself.
