Many experts have weighed in on the concept of Dry January, especially around New Year’s. For many, giving up alcohol, even for just a month, is a resolution and a commitment to leading a healthier lifestyle in the new year.

“This month may serve as a profound step for individuals grappling with alcohol dependency,” said Ashley Pena, L.C.S.W., a licensed social worker and executive director at Mission Connection, a mental health telehealth group. “It unearths a fundamental aspect crucial to recovery—acknowledging the struggle with alcohol.”

According to Men’s Health, which Pena spoke to, there are several benefits to Dry January, such as improved sleep, being in a better mood, and drinking less for the rest of the year. Some studies suggest that metabolic health can improve after just one month of no drinking, even with no change in diet or exercise.

“Consistent alcohol intake impacts the ability to authentically gauge one's emotions without relying on altering substances,” Pena said.

Ways To Keep Going With Dry January

Social pressure can make it difficult to participate in Dry January and still have fun with friends. There has been a rise in mocktails, which are basically just regular cocktails, but without the alcohol. There is also a growing number of non-alcoholic beer and wine products that consumers can enjoy instead.

In addition to abstaining from alcohol during social functions, participating in activities where food and drink aren’t present can also help curb cravings. Going for a walk, joining an exercise class, or taking part in a new activity or hobby with friends can help fill the time that might have otherwise been spent drinking.
