An expert has suggested that growing up under the pressure of belonging to the Reiner family may have contributed to Nick Reiner's alleged struggles with self-esteem.

Nick is currently accused of killing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, and is expected to be formally arraigned on murder charges early next year.

With the accused also recently diagnosed with schizophrenia and having a documented history of addiction, the expert believes these issues are the result of Nick Reiner's struggles with self-esteem.

Ahead of Nick's arraignment for the alleged murder of his parents, an addiction recovery expert has spoken about how growing up in a famous family may have resulted in him having self-worth issues.

Richard Taite, founder of Carrara Treatment, claimed that Nick may have felt undue pressure from the success of previous generations, particularly when comparing their achievements to what he may have perceived as his own shortcomings, according to TMZ.

It is already well known that Nick's grandfather, Carl Reiner, was widely regarded as a "national treasure," earning multiple awards over a long and distinguished career as an actor, author, comedian, director, and screenwriter.

Rob Reiner also forged a highly successful career in Hollywood, following a similar path and achieving major acclaim in his own right.

According to Taite, Nick, feeling pressured by their achievements, may have also led him to seek treatment for substance abuse, just like many celebrities who found themselves in similar situations.

Addressing how Nick's mental illness may have been treated during his time in rehab, Taite said that there are "substandard treatment centers" that may not have been providing him with the care he needed.

It remains unclear whether the rehabilitation centers Nick attended were substandard. However, reports indicate that he had been in and out of rehab more than 18 times by the age of 22.

He was also said to have been recently diagnosed with schizophrenia and was receiving treatment for the condition.

Reportedly, his doctors changed his medication shortly before he allegedly killed his parents, although it has not been officially confirmed whether the drugs had any direct impact on his mental state.

The name of the medication and the exact timeline of when Reiner was prescribed it, or when any adjustments were made, also remain unknown.

Amid Nick's struggles, his parents did their best to support him, including paying for his many costly rehabilitation stays.

However, he was reportedly nonchalant about their efforts, regardless of how much they tried to help him each time.

"At the end of the day, Nick didn't take the help seriously. This was true for years and years. His issues were far, far out of his parents' control," one insider told People Magazine.

"Nick lied a lot. He was unreliable, but he was also convincing and intelligent," added the insider about his behavior.

Still, according to the source, Nick's parents remained supportive of him till the very end.

"His family was empathetic to how much his struggles contributed to his behavior. They never lost hope in him, even when he was scaring them or making their lives harder," the insider further remarked.

The family's support for Nick appears to have continued even after the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele.

Recent reports have emerged indicating that they have expressed opposition to the death penalty, which Nick could face if found guilty of murdering his parents.

According to a source, the family does not see him as a monster, as they feel he needed help for his issues.

"They don't see him as a monster — they see him as someone who was failed," a source told Rob Shuter's #ShuterScoop.

The family reportedly intends to heavily push back on any prosecutorial plans in line with the death penalty as the murder case continues to proceed.

"Justice, to them, means treatment, accountability, and making sure this never happens again," a source remarked. "Another death isn't justice."

Meanwhile, they are of the belief that the tragic death of the Reiners is "a catastrophic failure of mental health treatment," rather than a premeditated crime.

"Nick is seriously ill. They believe killing him won't bring Rob and Michele back — and it won't fix what went wrong," a different insider close to the family revealed.
