In 2020, the musician's career paused due to his throat cancer diagnosis. However, the illness also brought to the fore how crucial regular health checks and early detection were, and Manilow championed it.
According to Onco Daily, the singer recalled that a change in his voice was discovered during a routine checkup, which led to a deeper investigation, resulting in a diagnosis. Manilow confessed that he was beyond shocked by the diagnosis, but he was also determined to overcome the hurdle.
He shared that all through the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, his family's support helped him scale through emotionally and mentally. As stated by the Cleveland Clinic, throat cancer is a general term for cancer that affects the throat and voice box.
This form of cancer usually causes tumors to form in the middle part of the patient's throat or voice box. It is, however, uncommon compared to other cancer types.

Before his diagnosis in 2020, the star had earlier had a hospitalization phase in 2018 due to bronchial infection. According to PEOPLE, the infection came on the heels of the first performance of his residency at the Westgate Las Vegas in 2018.
In 2017, the singer was ordered to remain on doctor’s rest due to sprained vocal cords, which forced him to postpone several shows in May.
A year before that, Manilow was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after he suffered complications from an emergency oral surgery he had in February while on the “One Last Time-One Last Tour.”
The Daily Mail noted that the incident also forced him to reschedule the dates for stops in Highland Heights, Kentucky, and Nashville.
Barry Manilow Shared A Career-Defining Update

The 82-year-old announced a significant change to his musical journey in Hollywood this year when he stated that he would be releasing a new album, which would also mark the end of his album recording era.
In an interview with Billboard, Manilow explained that he has been working on the album for a very long time, and his sound has since changed. He continued in the interview that he also had to go back and work on his sounds.
"I had to take all the strings out, all the background vocals out 'cause they don't do that anymore. They don't use strings and background vocals and all that. Even I heard that it sounded dated, so we had to go back and redo it," Manilow continued.
2025 also marks the 50th anniversary of his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Mandy." By next year, his second No. 1 single, "I Write the Songs," written by Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys, would also celebrate its 50th year.
