Reliving the last few days, Rob Reiner's friend spent with him and the family was not an easy fit.
A close friend of the late producer finally opened up, recalling the last time they spent together as nothing but good company. He, being among the last people to have seen the couple alive, discloses his point of view on their relationship, family dynamics, and children.
Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were reportedly violently stabbed to death in their home on Sunday, 14 December 2025. This gruesome act was allegedly committed by their son, Nick Reiner. Many other celebrities close to the couple mourn their death.
Rob Reiner's Close Friend Speaks Up On Recent Time Spent With Him

A few weeks before the couple was murdered n their Los Angeles home, they opened their house to a close friend. One of Rob's close friends and longtime collaborators, Barry Markowitz, who is also a cinematographer in the industry, shared the time he spent at their house a few weeks ago.
They stayed together at the Reiner residence in Brentwood, California, along with two of their kids, Nick and Romy. Rob had invited Markowitz to remain at their home while he was in town for the premiere of his latest film, "The Perfect Gamble," on November 14.
He explained that the late couple insisted he stay with them instead of going to lodge at a hotel. From the timeline, he claims, "I may have been one of the last people to see them." He described their routine as business as usual, unaffected by his presence.
While speaking to Page Six, he noted that their daughter, Romy, was in and out of the house but always came home for dinner, where they ate together, spent quality time watching TV, and played with the dogs. It was "One big love fest," he explained.
The Cinematographer Spoke On Nick Reiner's Physical And Mental State

Markowitz spent five days with the late couple. In that time, he observed their son, Nick, as well. He noted that although Nick had publicly struggled with addiction right from his teenage years, he seemed to be doing well.
"He looked great. He was sitting and talking with the family, they ate dinner together, old school, and a lot of love, always a lot of love," Rob's pal said. He added that Nick was also present during dinner time, and during the day, he was often out playing tennis or shooting hoops.
To him, there was nothing strange in the family dynamics or Nick's behavior. He was normal in that sense, helping around the house with the garbage and dishes.
Speaking of the 32-year-old being accused of taking his parents' lives, he said it was puzzling to him, as all he saw among the family members was a real display of love.
Talking about Nick's mental state, he said, "It's just a sickness. That's my verdict." Furthermore, he added that in the past, while he worked with the father and son, there were no clashes, as Nick was not the violent type.
The Director Left A Good Mark On Many In The Industry

Shortly after the news of his passing, many actors and entertainers shared tributes on social media recalling their experience with Rob. One of whom was Jane Fonda, who shared that the couple were loving, kind, and generous.
She described them as people who strived to make the world a better place. She also revealed that the couple had been assisting her with the launch of the Committee for the First Amendment.
The Blast shared details of another touching tribute from Kevin Bacon, who wrote about his professional relationship with the couple. He recalled how Rob had previously set him up on some acting jobs.
The cast of "A Few Good Men" also shared kind words about the actor, detailing the time they spent on set working together.
Rob And Michele's Bodies Were Discovered By Their Daughter, Romy

Earlier reports show that the couple was found lifeless by their daughter, Romy, as she went to visit them at their Los Angeles home. Officials from the Los Angeles Fire Department were then dispatched to their residence to provide medical aid, as reported by The Blast.
The responders reportedly found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead upon arrival, who were later confirmed to be Rob and Michele. The quest to determine who was responsible for the gory incident gave rise to many theories.
Their son, Nick, was then taken for questioning. As earlier stated, he has struggled with addiction for decades. Other reports share that Rob and his son were seen arguing while they attended Conan O'Brien's Christmas party on Saturday night.

The late couple was deeply concerned that their son was still head deep in substance abuse and that his mental health was taking a fall as a result. They had previously sent him to several facilities, spending millions, with the hope that he would get better.
According to previous reports, the filmmaker had been telling people that they were scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating.
Michele had also reportedly opened up to her friends, disclosing how she felt lost over how to deal with her son’s situation. They had tried everything, yet nothing was working. The couple had gotten so focused and desperate on getting him better that they stopped listening to him, and he kept going off the rails.
