Crystal joined a group of comedy heavyweights to publicly honor Rob Reiner in a statement released through the Associated Press on Tuesday evening.

The group included Albert Brooks, Larry David, Martin Short, and director Barry Levinson, all of whom praised the deceased director as “a great comic actor.”

“There is no other director who has his range,” the statement declared, while reflecting on Rob’s decades-long influence across film genres.

The friends emphasized how the 78-year-old understood the communal power of movies, writing, “Going to the movies in a dark theater filled with strangers having a common experience, laughing, crying, screaming in fear, or watching an intense drama unfold is still an unforgettable thrill.”

The statement focused heavily on how Rob Reiner worked with actors and writers, describing an environment built on trust and collaboration rather than control.

“From comedy to drama to ‘mockumentary’ to documentary he was always at the top of his game,” the friends wrote, adding that audiences trusted him and lined up to see his films.

The icons highlighted Rob’s attention to dialogue, tone, and emotional balance, calling his creative instincts “simply elegant.”

For those who worked with him, the producer’s greatest gift was freedom.

“If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process,” the statement said, explaining that collaborators felt they were part of a team rather than just hired hands.

Beyond the joint statement, Crystal has shared personal memories that underline how close his relationship with Rob truly was.

In a 2016 column for The Hollywood Reporter, the actor explained that their on-screen chemistry led to a genuine off-screen friendship.

“We became the closest of friends. And when I moved out here (from New York), we just spent all kinds of time together,” he said.

Their most famous collaboration came with the 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally,” which paired Crystal with Meg Ryan in a film directed by Rob and written by Nora Ephron.

Crystal later recalled sitting beside his friend during the first screening of the movie. “Rob and I were sitting in the back next to each other,” he said, before describing the now-iconic reaction to the deli scene.

“When Rob’s mother, Estelle, says, ‘I’ll have what she’s having,’ it was thunderous, a laugh you can only hear with the best of jokes in a concert hall,” Crystal recalled.

While tributes poured in, authorities confirmed disturbing details about Rob Reiner and his wife Michele’s deaths.

Police sources revealed the couple had been dead for hours before they were found, with signs of rigor mortis already present.

Investigators believe they were killed sometime between Saturday night and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Their daughter Romy discovered their bodies inside the family’s Los Angeles home after going to check on them.

As The Blast reported, a source close to the investigation claimed their throats had been cut and that they may have been asleep when they were attacked.

Their son, Nick Reiner, was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Although he has not yet been arraigned, the charges carry potential sentences of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said no decision has been made on whether prosecutors will seek capital punishment.

Following his arrest, new details about Nick’s movements and behavior in the hours around the tragic deaths of his parents surfaced.

As reported by The Blast, the 32-year-old attended a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien on December 13, the night before his parents were found dead,

At that event, he reportedly acted “odd” and “disruptive,” with guests saying he made people uncomfortable and repeatedly asked if others were famous and then got into a loud argument with his father, prompting concern.

After the party, Nick reportedly checked into a Santa Monica hotel around 4 a.m. using his own credit card, where staff later found a shower “full of blood” and blood on the bed, with sheets covering the window, though he had already left the room.

Hours later, police found him about 15-20 miles away in Exposition Park, and he was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with his parents’ deaths.
