How Late Rob Reiner Defended Son Nick's Drug Struggles Amid Fame Pressure

The newly surfaced clip posted on X, taken from an appearance on "2 Chairs and A Microphone" podcast, began with Nick admitting that opening up about his challenges was tough because of the judgment that followed.

"It's not hard to reveal that stuff. It's hard to reveal that stuff to then get told, 'You're a spoiled white rich kid,'" the 32-year-old candidly shared.

When the host asked who would make such remarks, Rob butted in, "The world." He explained, "I know what it's like to be the son of, to have people assume certain things about you, and it’s very difficult."

Rob reflected on how he managed life as the child of an icon without turning to drugs, saying the way was to block out the noise. However, he admitted that his son struggled with that balance.

"It's hard for him, this is his first time, and there's a lot of attention," Rob said, noting that Nick was navigating fame tied to both him and his grandfather.

Rob stood firm in defending his son, stressing that outsiders misjudge him without understanding the reality. "People can say what they want, but they don't know what he's going through, what he's experiencing, or why he's done what he does. It's pretty dumb, pretty ignorant," the film director slammed.

Years before being linked to his parents' tragic deaths, Nick spoke openly about his addiction, recounting periods of homelessness and his parents' insistence on repeated rehab attempts.

In a 2016 interview, he reflected on entering treatment at age 15 and the years that followed. Nick explained that rejecting further rehab programs left him moving between shelters.

"If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless," he said, per Page Six, adding that at 19, he "could have died" living on the streets.

He described those years as formative, later detailing them in his semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie.
