Ethan did not try to hide how heavy fame felt for Maya when she was young.

While speaking during Variety’s Actors on Actors, he said there “were a lot of things about her childhood that were really, really hard and complicated, and things I regret for her.”

Although he didn’t go into details, he made it clear that being a child in the spotlight came with challenges most people never see.

Ethan shared Maya with Uma Thurman during their marriage from 1998 to 2005, a period filled with attention and pressure.

As their daughter grew older, he began to notice signs that her childhood was weighing on her in ways he couldn’t fully fix.

Still, he explained that Maya had a deep sense of who she was even at a young age.

Even with the challenges, Ethan Hawke said Maya had an anchor: art. He explained that he always knew she would “be an artist.”

According to him, she was going to be a very good one because her creativity showed up in everything she did.

He described watercoloring, dancing, and singing as her “safe place” throughout childhood.

The “Black Phone” star emphasized that Maya naturally gravitated toward “human communication,” a trait that made acting feel like a home for her.

He recalled a moment when her teacher asked if she was happy. Maya responded, “Do you really think that’s the question?”

She later said, “I don’t think that’s a very interesting question. I think there’s a lot more interesting questions than whether I’m happy or not. Am I happy? No. But I don’t aspire to be happy.”

Her words left a strong impression on Ethan. Hearing a 13-year-old speak with such emotional clarity convinced him she would survive the pressures of the entertainment world.

That is why he added, “So I never worried about her going into the arts, because I knew that was gonna save her life.”

As Maya grew older, the world got to see the artistic strengths her father had always noticed.

She became widely known for her role as Robin Buckley in “Stranger Things” and continued building a career through “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” “Do Revenge,” and “Maestro.”

In a past interview with the Wall Street Journal, the 27-year-old talked about how much she relied on her parents for guidance.

She said, “I’m always running decisions by them.” Maya explained that because they both had similar levels of success but really different experiences, she learned about the dangers and opportunities in the business.

The actress added that the insight would keep her from making some mistakes that young actors could make.

Still, Maya didn’t escape public judgment. She openly addressed being called a nepo baby, telling The Times that she was comfortable with not deserving the fame but still choosing the spotlight anyway.

She also said, “I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job, and go to open casting roles.” Instead, she chose to be herself.

Maya explained, “It’s okay to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be.”

Ethan Hawke has defended his daughter many times, especially when people criticize them for working together.

After Maya came up with the idea for their movie “Wildcat,” the actor told Variety, “Put simply, I’m a nepo dad! And I’m not embarrassed about it.”

During that interview, Maya admitted she felt insecure at times. She said the internet didn’t have a lot of nuances.

However, she also said her dad had been a massive teacher and that they simply enjoyed working together.

Ethan agreed, saying, “If someone wants to criticize us for working together, that’s totally fair. You have to let people have their opinion. You just have to try to do a good job when you’re onstage.”

Beyond Maya’s career, Ethan also opened up about parts of his personal life he refuses to discuss publicly.

After divorcing Thurman, he married Ryan Hawke in 2008, and they now share two younger children, Clementine and Indiana.

However, when it comes to discussing the divorce that affected all his children, the film director draws a line.

During an interview with The Times in November, he described the public eye as “gasoline,” explaining how attention could make private pain even worse.

Ethan revealed he made a promise to his children not to talk about the divorce in public.

Still, he offered one reflection, saying that everywhere he had traveled, men and women had difficulties staying married.
