Simone Biles Recalls The Weird Instinct That Told Her Jonathan Owens Was Forever

Simone Biles has spent her life trusting her body, knowing how it flips, twists, balances, and lands.

However, five years ago, she felt something entirely different. It wasn’t physical, and it wasn’t logical.

Instead, it was an inexplicable pull, a feeling she says she had “never felt before,” and it arrived the moment she met Jonathan Owens.

As it turned out, that strange instinct became the foundation of their love story.

When Simone Biles looks back on her first date with Jonathan Owens, she remembers a sensation she couldn’t name, something beyond butterflies or excitement.

In a chat with PEOPLE, she shared, “Gosh… It wouldn't even be giddy. What is the right term? I could not stand when a girl says, ‘Oh, my god, I knew he was the one because…’ What is that feeling like? What does that even mean?”

Laughing at the memory of trying to pinpoint that emotion, she admitted that she still doesn’t have the perfect word for it. What she remembers is what she said afterward.

“I don't know the term for it, but as soon as I met Jonathan, I remember coming home and telling my friends because they were at my house getting ready with me for that little date,” she said. “I came back and I was like, ‘Oh, I think I'm going to marry him.’”

That immediate certainty caught even her off guard. With only one prior relationship, she wasn’t used to intuitive declarations.

“Why did I say that? I don't know. I don't know why I said that,” she laughed. “It was just a random weird feeling that I've never felt before, and then it just happened. So I just think he was so kind and sweet, he made me laugh.”

Long before their first date, Biles and Owens' paths almost crossed in a completely different way.

Biles was invited to lead the Houston Texans out of the tunnel in January 2019.

In the photos taken that day, Owens can be seen in the background, a surprising coincidence the couple later discovered.

However, their real introduction didn’t happen until March 2020 on the exclusive dating app Raya, where Biles saw Owens’ profile and made the first move.

“He would say I slid into his DMs,” she told the Wall Street Journal. “I saw him and I was like, 'Oh, he's pretty cute,' so I said hi ... and then I saw that he was in the Houston area, so we started chatting a little bit, and then we went to hang out a week or two later.”

That casual message became the spark for their future, leading to a romance that unfolded largely online before flourishing in person during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After their in-person connection solidified, Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens became inseparable.

By August 2020, they went Instagram official, giving fans their first look at their dynamic.

Over the years, the couple shared glimpses of their bond at sporting events, vacations, and simple everyday moments.

Their relationship grew naturally, and by February 2022, Owens proposed.

They married twice in 2023, first in an intimate Texas courthouse ceremony, then again in a lavish second wedding in Mexico that May.

Through it all, that “random weird feeling” Biles couldn’t explain on their first date had proven to be right.

Fresh from her history-making run at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Biles is taking a much-needed break from gymnastics, but she isn’t slowing down.

Instead, she’s enjoying a role she rarely had time for: being a supportive NFL wife.

“It’s such a fun time because I've actually missed so many of his games throughout his career because I've been doing my own thing,” she told PEOPLE. “So to be there in person and to be in a different atmosphere obviously is so much fun."

It’s a full-circle moment for both of them.

Owens supported Biles through Olympic pressure, and now she’s cheering him on through the adrenaline of the football field.
