Tekashi 6ix9ine Sparks Backlash With 'Dark Humor' About Demi Lovato

Tekashi 6ix9ine is catching major heat online after joking about Demi Lovato's addiction struggles.

The rapper mocked Lovato by saying she is bound to relapse and even offered to give her drugs, sparking outrage from fans who say he crossed a line. 

Demi Lovato has been open about her near-fatal overdose in 2018, during which she suffered three strokes and a heart attack.

6ix9ine's comment about Lovato's recovery during a podcast appearance did not sit well with fans, many of whom are calling him out for being cruel and desperate for attention.

One person asked, "Why would you wish someone else's downfall?" while another wrote, "This clown fell off years ago and is still trying to stay relevant," posting a clip of him being beaten in a gym. 

Others did not hold back either. "Looks like someone relapsed, and it ain't Demi," one user wrote. Another added, "Demi: Clean, sober, and hot! 6ix9ine: who, ugly, toothless, stinky, and dirty!"

TMZ's X post on the incident reignited the backlash, with many calling the joke heartless. One fan wrote, "Hearing this actually hurt my heart bro... let's not forget that she was this close 👌🏾 to dying...like for real...is he f-cking serious?"

More piled on, stating, "I don't know which is worse, him saying this or the way she is laughing about it. You don't joke about people relapsing or sending shit. You need to do better."

This netizen summed it all up, writing, "Funny how the man who treats a courthouse like a second home feels entitled to comment on someone else's healing. embarrassing."

6ix9ine insists his comments were not malicious, just his version of an edgy joke. The star raised eyebrows during a recent sit-down on Andie Elle's podcast when the discussion turned to former child stars and drug use. 

While chatting about the topic, he suddenly brought up Lovato, joking that the singer was going to relapse despite years of sobriety. TMZ reported that he first confused Lovato with a Nickelodeon star, saying, "Remember iCarly? She does cocaine now. Oh my bad, that was Demi Lovato."

When the host corrected him, pointing out that Lovato is clean, 6ix9ine laughed and added, "Nah, she is gonna relapse. I'll send her some cocaine."

After the interview circulated online, the artist told TMZ it was meant as "dark humor." He argued that "dark humor is going extinct" and that "people in this new generation are just overly sensitive."

6ix9ine's recent comments have resurfaced painful memories of what Lovato endured back in 2018. The TV personality's near-fatal overdose left a lasting impact that she has spoken about openly in the years since.

The BBC shared that the former Disney star was found unconscious at her Los Angeles home in July 2018 after overdosing on opioids, reportedly mixed with fentanyl.

In her 2021 documentary, Lovato revealed that she suffered three strokes and a heart attack during the medical emergency, and doctors told her she had only minutes to live. The experience left her with brain damage, blind spots, and blurry vision that made it impossible to drive. 

"For a long time, I had a really hard time reading. It was a big deal when I was able to read a book, which was like two months later, because my vision was so blurry," she said, recalling the slow process of recovery. 

Lovato's career has been as public as her personal battles. From her early days on "Barney & Friends" to Disney Channel fame in "Camp Rock," she quickly became one of the most recognizable young talents in Hollywood. But behind the spotlight, Lovato was fighting deep personal struggles.

Apart from her fight with addiction, she has spoken candidly about eating disorders and self-harm. In her 2012 film "Stay Strong," Lovato described facing these issues daily, and in a 2017 documentary, she opened up about substance use during her teenage years.

Despite those dark moments, Lovato built a powerful career. She has released six albums, earned major hits like "Sorry Not Sorry," and topped UK charts. 

Before his latest controversy, 6ix9ine last grabbed headlines in late 2024 when he landed back in legal trouble for breaking the rules of his supervised release. The 29-year-old was taken into custody on October 29, 2024, and brought before a federal judge in New York.

The Blast reported that his arrest came after he violated the terms of his 2020 plea deal, which had placed him under supervision following charges tied to racketeering, weapons, and drug-related crimes. 

His attorney, Lance Lazzaro, said 6ix9ine was informed weeks earlier about the violations but arrived late to his court date, prompting U.S. Marshals to be dispatched before he eventually surrendered.

Among the listed offenses were performing in Las Vegas without approval from his probation officer, testing positive for meth, and skipping a mandatory drug screening.

Fans are making it clear that some jokes are not worth making.
