Russell Crowe's thoughts on marriage have changed after failing to achieve a happily-ever-after on the first try.

The "Gladiator" star got candid about his years-long romance with Britney Theriot and the widespread rumors of their engagement. He and the former actress have been dating for five years since they were romantically linked in November 2020.

Russell Crowe was previously married to Australian actress Danielle Spencer from 2003 until 2012; however, their divorce was finalized in 2018. They welcomed two sons during their union, Charles and Tennyson.

The Hollywood veteran addressed the future of his blossoming romance with Theriot in a new interview, revealing that he had no plans to tie the knot with his longtime partner. He refuted the viral rumors of their engagement, saying:

"No, I'm not going to get married again. Doing it once is cool, great, you know. But I don't want to do it again."

Crowe told Australia's 60 Minutes that he and Theriot had built a strong foundation for their relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend and did not need a ring to validate the depth of their feelings for each other. Although Crowe separated from Spencer in 2012, their divorce wasn't finalized until April 9, 2018. He confirmed the end of their nine-year union in a social media post, announcing that he was officially a divorcee.

The news came just two days after Crowe marked the conclusion of his chapter with Spencer. He auctioned off 200 personal items, all acquired during his marriage, at Sotheby's Australia on April 7, the same day as his birthday and wedding anniversary.

The event titled "The Art of Divorce" featured signature items from Crowe's life and career, including the 1890 Leandro Bisiach violin he used in the 2003 movie "Master and Commander." The auction house claimed it generated $3.7 million from the sale of Crowe's collection.

Besides stealing hearts as an actor, Crowe gained more fans as a singer. The Daily Mail reported that he once claimed he knew his marriage to Spencer was over in 2011 and created an album inspired by their impending separation.

According to Crowe, songs such as "Sadness Of A Woman" and "Too Far Gone" from the album "The Crowe/ Doyle Songbook" were directed at Spencer. He not only used their doomed relationship as inspiration but also tricked his then-wife into performing on the divorce album.

"Imagine getting your spouse to sing these songs in that situation," Crowe said, noting that he had tricked Spencer into performing with him by stirring her jealous side. He pretended there was another female singer interested in working with him, making Spencer volunteer for the part.
