How far would you go to be on TV? There’s a woman in France who went a little too far to make sure that a sign that she was carrying would show up on camera. We mean she literally went way too far! The woman was a spectator in the famed bicycle race the Tour de France. As riders were coming to her position she stepped out onto the track to make sure that she was seen by the camera. What followed was a massive crash that literally brought the whole race to a halt!
What Was She Trying To Do?
Her sign read, “Allez Opi-Omi” which translates to come on granny or grandad. The woman at least had a positive motive as she was trying to lift her Granny’s spirits by showing up on TV. Sadly, her escapades caused the massive crash. She essentially hits a german cyclist with the sign and this causes him to completely lose control and fall off his bike.
From there he takes out most of the competitors that were around him. Before we know it these cyclists are falling down like dominoes.
What’s Ilegal About This?
This is actually a pretty good question. Logically interfering with a bike and causing a ton of highly trained athletes to take hard falls isn’t ideal. Where in the law does it say that you can’t do it?
What she is being charged with is involuntarily causing non-debilitating injuries. It’s a little bit like how you can get hit with a fine if you ultimately cause a car crash. Is she looking at jail time? How serious is the offense?
She Is Currently In Police Custody

This woman whose name remains a mystery is currently in Police custody. She probably did the best thing that she could do though after the incident. In the midst of the carnage, she was able to flee the scene and elude the police. She probably then consulted a lawyer and she’s said to have turned herself in this morning.
What she is potentially facing is a 1500 euro fine for the incident. That’s a decent amount of money for people across the pond for sure. However, she’s not facing jail time or any other type of consequence. If her action had caused a more severe injury and even potentially death, yes that does happen in cycling, she certainly would’ve been in way more trouble!
The Show Must Go On
Although a large number of cyclists fell in the incident the tour is set to continue. Even on the day of that particular race some of the cyclists who fell eventually got back up and caught up to the leaders!
The Tour has not officially announced any type of extra safety measures for the remaining races. To ensure that an issue like this does not happen again. People are lining the roads as they always have. There’s always going to be a chance to see one of these massive crashes once again!
Our beautiful sport is completely unique and extra special in how accessible we are to the fans.
If we could please remind all spectators along the roads to stand back, at a safe distance, as the race passes by.
