Anthony Hopkins Slams Estranged Daughter Over Reconnection Snub

Anthony Hopkins won't be losing any sleep over his daughter's refusal to reconcile amid their years-long estrangement.

The Hollywood icon recently addressed his broken relationship with his only child, Abigail Hopkins, whom he welcomed during his first marriage to actress Petronella Barker. He has previously admitted to not being the best father and husband.

Anthony Hopkins tied the knot for the first time in 1966 and divorced Petronella Barker in 1972. His second marriage was to Jennifer Lynton from 1973 to 2002, followed by a long-lasting union with Stella Arroyave, which began in 2003 and continues to date.

During a recent interview, Anthony was asked about his estranged relationship with Abigail, which has lasted over two decades. He revealed that his wife, Stella, had taken the first step to reconciliation; however, her efforts were ignored.

"My wife, Stella, sent an invitation [to Abigail] to come and see us. Not a word of response. So I think, okay, fine. I wish her well, but I'm not going to waste blood over that," Anthony told The New York Times. He stressed that he would not waste his time on someone who wished to live their life in resentment.

"I could carry resentment over the past, but that's death. You're not living. You have to acknowledge one thing: that we are imperfect. We're not saints," Anthony added. He argued that he did his best as a father, but "life is painful," and people get hurt despite one's best wishes.

Anthony continued berating Abigail's decisionto ignore him, claiming that one shouldn't live their life holding on to the past or the things that hurt them.He noted that it was essential to move past things and look forward to the future, but if one chose to harbor resentment, he would not judge their choices.

The TV personality doubled down on doing the best he could have done and declared he did not care if Abigail read his soon-to-be-released memoir, "We Did OK, Kid." Despite his cold reaction, Anthony's heart softened when the interviewer offered to change the topic.

"Please. I want you to. Because I don't want to hurt her," the father of one said. As stated, Anthony welcomed Abigail during his first marriage to Barker. His relationship with his daughter was rocky from the start because he reportedly left home when she was still a young child.

According to Hello! Magazine, Abigail has been vocal about her decades-long estrangement from her famous father. In a 2006 interview, she revealed that Anthony had divorced her mom when she was still a toddler and did not make an effort to see her.

"I would see him, but maybe once a year. There is a little bit of sadness, but I have to get on with my life," Abigail confessed. She claimed their relationship had always been that way, noting that Anthony would pop into her life as quickly as he left it.

The little contact they had ended when Abigail was 16, following a heated row between her and Anthony over a comment he made about her mom. Because of their rift, the "Westworld" star wasn't there to support his daughter during her drug addiction struggles.

Following Abigail's turbulent phase at 18, she and Anthony reconnected in the 1990s. Their reunion saw the father and daughter make a rare red-carpet appearance at the actor's "Little Man Tate" movie premiere.

Abigail also starred in Anthony's movies "Remains of the Day" and "Shadowlands." Unfortunately, their relationship had fizzled out by 2001, and Anthony later admitted they were estranged in an interview. He did not sound shaken up about it, noting he knew little about her life.

Anthony echoed similar sentiments in 2018, saying he had no idea whether Abigail had kids. "I don't care one way or the other…You don't have to like your family. Children don't like their fathers. You don't have to love each other," the entertainer bluntly stated at the time.

Anthony's recent comments about his relationship with Abigail follow his candid recollection of what inspired his sobriety journey. The Blast covered the story, reporting that he did a complete 180 after a blackout incident.

According to Anthony, he had been driving while intoxicated without a destination in mind and could have been involved in a serious accident. He immediately realized he had gone too far when his initial reaction to his recklessness was indifference.

Once he realized he needed help, Anthony recalled contacting a former agent and beginning his journey with a new inner voice. He claimed the voice encouraged him to change his ways, and with the help of others in similar situations, he achieved 50 years of sobriety.
