Tensions ran high on the set of "Inside the NBA" Thursday night as Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith went head-to-head in a heated debate about the massive NBA gambling scandal that's rocked the league and led to over 30 arrests, including current and former players, coaches, and even alleged Mafia members. The fiery exchange unfolded after host Ernie Johnson asked the panel to weigh in on the FBI's sweeping investigation, which resulted in the arrest of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA player Damon Jones.
Kenny Smith Says NBA Betting Scandal Is About Addiction, Not Greed

Smith took a measured, empathetic stance, describing gambling as an addiction that drives illogical decisions, even among NBA athletes earning millions.
"We're surprised because when you have access, and you're at the top of the game, you have access to millions and millions of dollars in this league," Smith said, per FOX. "So, it was surprising that they would put themselves in that position, possibly. And then it's innocent until proven guilty."
He went on to frame the scandal as a cautionary tale of compulsion rather than calculation, saying, "We have to realize gambling is an addiction. The addiction of it is what makes you make illogical decisions… regardless of your background or financial status."
Charles Barkley Rejects Addiction Defense In The League's Gambling Scandal Debate

Never one to bite his tongue, Charles Barkley pushed back hard, calling the NBA players' alleged actions "flat-out stupid," not symptomatic of addiction. "The reason I'm mad at Kenny is this ain't got nothing to do with damn gambling addiction," Barkley shot back. "These dudes are stupid."
Charles Barkley added that no amount of gambling justification could explain why millionaire athletes would risk their careers, saying, "Under no circumstances can you fix basketball games. Rozier makes $26 million. How much is he going to benefit [from] taking himself out of the game to get Unders? He's making $26 million."
Charlie Barkley And Kenny Smith's On-Air Fight Heats Up As Shaq Weighs In

Smith didn't back down, countering that Charles Barkley's own logic supported his stance. "You're proving my point," Smith replied. "That's an illogical thought process. If you're making $26 million to win $50,000, that's illogical. So, you're proving my point. It's [an] addiction."
But Charles Barkley got the last word, throwing up his hands and declaring, "That's not addiction, that's stupidity."
Former NBA star Shaquille O'Nealjoined in with a tone of disappointment rather than anger. "I'm ashamed that those guys would put their families and their careers in jeopardy," Shaq said. "If you're making $9 million, how much more do you need? Especially if you know you could lose everything. They dropped the ball."
FBI Details Mafia-Linked NBA Gambling Investigation Involving Four Teams

The FBI described the case as "mind-boggling," alleging that the scheme stretched across four NBA teams and four Mafia crime families, generating over $7 million in illegal profits. Officials said participants used high-tech tools, including tampered shuffling machines and X-ray poker tables, to cheat victims and rig bets.
Those arrested include members of the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese families, along with figures tied to the Hornets, Trail Blazers, Lakers, and Raptors organizations. One individual is Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, who has been identified as "Co-Conspirator 8" in federal court documents and accused of leaking insider information to gamblers. Prosecutors allege Billups tipped off a betting ring about his team's plans to intentionally tank a game against the Chicago Bulls, giving bettors an illegal edge.
The investigation, which spanned January 2022 to March 2024, marks one of the largest gambling scandals in NBA history, leaving fans, players, and analysts reeling.
LeBron James' Name Pulled Into NBA Scandal Over Insider Leak

As The Blast previously reported, the FBI's indictment alleges that former NBA player Damon Jones, a longtime friend and former teammate of LeBron James, sold or attempted to profit from non-public information about the Lakers superstar's injury status.
The alleged leak reportedly occurred just days after James broke the NBA's all-time scoring record, before he was ruled out of the February 9, 2023, game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Federal investigators claim Jones may have used or shared insider knowledge of James' injury to influence bets and gain an unfair advantage in the broader gambling scheme.
While LeBron has not been charged or accused of wrongdoing, the mention of his name in federal documents has only intensified the media frenzy surrounding the scandal.
