In the launch party video, Swift described the album closer as a story told through the eyes of a fictional character named Kitty, a mesmerizing showgirl who leaves a lasting impression. "'The Life of a Showgirl' is the album closer," Swift explained. "It follows the story of this fictional showgirl named Kitty, who my character went to see perform, and she was so absolutely mesmerizing that it made me want to do it."

After the performance, Swift's character approaches Kitty to give her flowers, expecting a moment of admiration, but instead receives a sobering truth. "She has this moment of realness with me where she's like, 'You don't want to do this. It's really hard. People take advantage of you. You seem so sweet. Do anything else,'" Swift said.

Swift went on to explain that this theme mirrors the real-life warnings she and other artists have received when entering the music industry. "Anybody who's ever made it in music has had a lot of people give them that warning," she said. "People just trying to warn you that it's not all flowers and magic, there's a lot you have to endure."

Why Sabrina Carpenter Was The Perfect Fit

One of Swift's favorite parts of the track came after it was finished. "When we were writing it, we finished it, and I just kind of thought, I want Sabrina to sing on this so bad," she revealed. Swift praised Sabrina Carpenter as both a close friend and an artist who perfectly embodies the spirit of the song.

"She's someone who's really well equipped for this career," Swift said. "She's so good at moving through backlash or criticism, or people being unfair to her or picking her apart. She has the temperament to pivot and use it as fuel."

Because the song centers on perseverance, resilience, and love for one's craft despite the challenges, Swift said Carpenter was the perfect choice. "That's kind of what the song was about, having this love for it and a love for the game that overrides how hard this can be," she explained.

When Swift asked Carpenter to be part of the song, her reaction was immediate and full of excitement. "She was like, 'Are you kidding? I'm dead. Yes, of course. I've been waiting. I thought you'd never ask!'" Swift recalled with a laugh. Carpenter even recorded her vocals during her tour stop in Sweden, taking time on her days off to make it happen. "That is a showgirl for you," Swift said proudly.
