Miley Cyrus Reveals Why She and Dad Billy Ray Don't Go To Therapy To Fix Strained Relationship

Following years of reported strain, Miley Cyrus and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, unexpectedly found their way back to each other. 

The Cyrus family rift reportedly began after Billy Ray's 2022 split from Miley's mom, Tish, which created a divide among the siblings. Subtle signs of tension soon followed, from social media unfollows to the lack of public interactions between Miley and her dad.

Now, broken bonds have been mended, and the “Wrecking Ball” singer revealed that it was done without going to therapy. 

In an appearance on “CBS Sunday Mornings,” the “Party In The USA” hitmaker reflected on her relationship with her dad and how giving him a song, “Secrets,” helped make peace, allowing them to move forward rather than rehashing what had happened.

Speaking with host Tracy Smith, Miley shared that she and her father have always communicated best through music rather than long conversations.

She added that the track dedicated to him expressed everything she wanted to say, accomplishing in a few minutes what "a family with a more structured, therapeutic dynamic" might need multiple sessions to achieve.

Instead of sitting on the therapist's couch, father and daughter have their own way of healing. "We just do studio sessions and we send a song and we say, 'love you!' And that feels peaceful for us,” Miley said. 

The “Something Beautiful” singer then shared Billy‘s candid reaction to receiving the thoughtful gift from her, saying he cried. "You don't see your dad cry a lot," the “Flowers” singer revealed, adding that she can't recall seeing him cry since the death of his own father.

Aside from getting emotional in front of his daughter, Billy previously took to social media to announce the gesture, which doubled as a gift for his 64th birthday in August. 

He posted a video of himself listening to the song, which featured his favorite band, Fleetwood Mac, nodding his head while smiling. In the caption, he praised the “We Can’t Stop” singer and declared his love for her.

The reconciliation between Miley and Billy Ray seemingly confirms that there was a rift within the family. According to The Blast, rumors of bad blood intensified last year when the “Hannah Montana” alum won her first-ever Grammy but failed to mention her father in her acceptance speech.

Fans quickly noticed the omission and took to calling it a clear sign of ongoing family strain. Adding to the controversy, Billy Ray's appearance at President Donald Trump's post-inauguration Liberty Ball also drew backlash.

During the event, the country singer delivered a performance that sparked outrage, even from his son, Trace Cyrus, who publicly labeled it "embarrassing." Sources also claimed Miley had also seen the performance and found it "cringeworthy."

Before making peace with Billy Ray, Miley in May hinted that the tension between them was in the past. As The Blast reported, the singer took to her Instagram Stories to update fans on where she stood with her dad. 

"My dad and I have had our challenges over the years," Miley shared. "Now, in my 30s, family is my priority above all else. I'm at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing."

At the time, there was also speculation that Miley and her mother, Tish, were at odds after fans noticed Tish had unfollowed her on Instagram. However, Miley later clarified that the unfollow was simply an accident.

As rumors about the Cyrus family continued to swirl, the youngest of the brood, Noah Cyrus, shared her thoughts. According to The Blast, Noah made it clear that neither she nor her family is bothered by public opinions or speculation.

She explained that she prefers to stay away from gossip, drama, and online chatter about her family's private affairs, noting that music, not controversy, is what truly connects the Cyruses to their fans.

However, Noah admitted that constantly being the center of public attention has been emotionally exhausting. She also hinted that there really had been tension within the family, but suggested that things have since improved.
