Madonna, the Queen of Pop, has stunned fans by revealing the terrifying truth behind her 2023 health scare.
The superstar admitted she spent four days unconscious in intensive care after a bacterial infection spiraled into sepsis.
In her first podcast interview since the ordeal, the 67-year-old shared how close she came to death and what ultimately pulled her through.
Madonna's Terrifying ICU Ordeal
In a candid conversation on Jay Shetty's "On Purpose Podcast," Madonna opened up about the sudden and life-threatening illness that brought her world to a halt.
"I was rehearsing for a tour, and I got a bacterial infection," she recalled. "'One minute I was alive and dancing around, and the next minute I was in the ICU, unconscious for four days. I got out of hospital, they took me off the ventilator, I started to breathe on my own, and I had something called sepsis, and it can kill you.'"
At the time, the singer had been preparing for her global Celebration Tour, but the diagnosis meant everything stopped instantly.
Sepsis, she explained, was an enemy she never expected to face, and it left her fighting for survival.
Struggles After Survival

Even after leaving the hospital, recovery was far from easy for Madonna.
She admitted the disease stripped her of her trademark strength and stamina.
"Everybody recovers at a different rate, and I've always seen myself as Superwoman," she said. "So I was like, 'Oh, I'm going to kick this. I'm going to be good, I'm getting back into rehearsal, but I had no strength, no energy, couldn't get out of bed, and I didn't know when it was gonna end."
The ordeal not only sidelined her tour but forced her to reckon with her own vulnerability.
Fans who had followed her career for decades saw a rare glimpse of fragility from a star known for her resilience.
Madonna's Gratitude And Determination

In 2023, shortly after being released from the hospital, Madonna reached out to her fans with words of gratitude.
She assured them she was determined to heal and return to the stage.
She wrote at the time, "Thank you for your positive energy. Prayers and words of healing and encouragement. I have felt your love. I'm on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life."
Madonna explained that when she regained consciousness in the hospital, her children were the first thing on her mind.
Right after that, she worried about letting down her fans, who had bought tickets, and the team that had worked so hard to prepare her show.
She stressed her dislike of disappointing people and promised to focus on recovery so she could return as soon as possible. Her plan was to reschedule the North American leg of her Celebration Tour and begin again in Europe. The message, heartfelt and defiant, reassured fans that the pop icon still had her fighting spirit.
A Brush With Death And A Dose Of Narcan

Reports later revealed that Madonna was administered Narcan, a drug more commonly used to counter opioid overdoses, to treat her acute septic shock before she was rushed to the hospital.
The powerful intervention highlighted just how close she came to a worst-case scenario.
The singer was left bedridden and admitted she felt "weak and very tired" for weeks afterward. However, as time passed, she regained her health and eventually made a full recovery.
The scare was a sobering reminder that even global icons are not immune to sudden, life-threatening medical crises. For Madonna, the experience seemed to deepen her outlook on life and strengthen her spiritual resolve.
Madonna On Spirituality And Survival

Elsewhere in her podcast interview with Jay Shetty, Madonna reflected on how spirituality carried her through both her rise to superstardom and her darkest moments.
"You need to be spiritual to be successful. Success is having a spiritual life, period. I wouldn't be here if I didn't have one," she said.
Her journey with spirituality began in the mid-1990s, shortly before the birth of her daughter Lourdes. She credited her discovery of Kabbalah in 1996 as a pivotal shift in her life.
"What have I done for others? That's really the only way you can be successful in life," Madonna explained, emphasizing her desire to "reveal light in the world" through her music and influence.
She added, "I want it all, but I want it for the sake of sharing, not to keep it for myself."
In a particularly moving reflection, the seven-time Grammy winner highlighted the importance of humility and acceptance.
"Spiritual wisdom is not helpful when everything's going your way. It's helpful when you're challenged and when you're happy," she said.
Madonna reflected that life can change instantly, so it's important not to take anything for granted. She emphasized the need for humility and described "radical acceptance" as understanding that whatever happens is meant to be and trusting that, in the end, you'll be okay.
