Montgomery's gameday outfit is likely no surprise to his longtime supporters, as he's always spoken highly of his time with the organization, which dates back to his childhood.

He later joined forces with the organization as their recruitment ambassador, aiming to inspire families worldwide to give scouting a try. He even spoke with The Blast in August 2025 about his experience and explained how it had a tremendous impact on who he is today.

"You know, I was a young African American kid who is from a poor area of Cincinnati, Ohio," he said. "My mom put me into a place where people loved me unconditionally for who I was and [were] willing to teach me all the things that they felt like I needed to know as far as being a young man to help me be who I am today."

"Scouting has helped me become the man that I am today," he added. "Like, making some of the right decisions, being conscious enough to stand on something that I believe in, [even] if that means I'm standing on my own."

He concluded, "You know, being able to be high in character to certain people who look like me or who don't look like me, and they can think that it's cool to be who I am because I'm the one who's doing it. You know, just being able to take that risk and that jump to be different for something that I really believe in, and scouting helped me do that every chance that I get."

With his gameday outfit, Montgomery hopes to spark conversations among families and parents about how scouting can truly help shape a child's future.

"Being able to be around some Scout Masters who share some great life morals to try to better you as a human, and be able to teach you some of the things that your parents don't really have time to teach you. I think that having an extra lifeline to help young men and young women to be able to grow into who they are personally, I think it's super big," he said. "I'm a firm believer that it takes a village to raise a child."

After feeling the mounting pressure from fans and social media users, Montgomery revealed that a conversation with his nephew helped change his perspective.

“I went through all of that stuff and one person who saved my life was my nephew," he said. "I was in a situation to where I was this close to doing something that I knew I shouldn’t have done, that would have changed the trajectory of my life or changed the trajectory of everybody else around me in my life."

He further explained, "And my nephew called me, right when I was in the midst of doing so. And he didn’t say anything about football. He didn’t say anything about how fast I was. He just said, ‘Uncle Dave, I miss you. How are you doing?’ And my nephew, and it meant so much to me."

Now, he's doing better than ever, already racking up three touchdowns and 233 yards in just four weeks of his seventh NFL season.
