Pop star Taylor Swift might be trying to show off her sexy Showgirl side following the release of her new album, but some fans still can't get on board with the visuals. The "Cruel Summer" singer released several different album variants, also showing off a different Showgirl costume, but it looks like it fell flat for many fans. In addition to her hair not being made up, some have called her out for having a "flat" expression and not conveying the desirability that most showgirls are known for.

Taylor Swift Faces Backlash Over Lackluster Album Artwork

Many fans on social media have said that they are “put off” by the “Anti-Hero” singer’s Showgirl era, with one fan vocalizing on Reddit that the images fell “short of where it is meant to.”

The user admitted that they weren’t sure if it was “intentional” to show “ less makeup, less glitter, hair not done, low lighting, etc.” than a typical showgirl performance, but admitted, “I do feel it is going to miss the mark.”

Taylor’s Facial Expression Comes Under Criticism

One user attributed the lackluster reception of the photos to her facial expressions. “I think it’s the lack of facial expression. When I think of showgirls, there is always a big smile on the face selling the fantasy,” they explained, noting that Taylor looks “uncomfortable in that outfit.”

“Taylor doesn’t look nearly as happy as the showgirls in any of the photos, in smile or body language. She does the big showgirl smile plenty in the actual tour performances, so I assume this is an intentional choice?” another user asked, but fans just couldn’t be sure.

Taylor Swift Told She Doesn’t Display ‘Sexy Confidence’

Another user pointed out that the “Love Story” singer’s posture in the photos might be leading some of the antagonism, as she seemed “closed off” in the album artwork. “Honestly, I think it’s her shoulders. I know there’s a lot of talk about her posture, and I understand that can be a struggle,” a user wrote. “But for all of her stage training (at least I would assume she’s had stage training), the fact that she can’t get her shoulders back and her chest out is astonishing.”

“The showgirls open themselves up to the stage and the camera. She has closed off body language while seemingly portraying this sexy confidence, and it makes our brains go ?????” they continued, with another fan saying that their take “sums it up perfectly.”

Is She Just Copying An Aesthetic?

In other posts, fans have compared her outfit to a "Temu showgirl." In the comments of this post, one user said that it felt like she was wearing a "Halloween costume" instead of trying to show "any understanding" of what it means to be a showgirl.

"Sorry, but it’s giving Halloween costume," they wrote. "She does not seem to have any understanding of what a Showgirl is, and is just copying the aesthetic. It is viscerally cringey to me. I wish she could just be authentic instead of always trying to do a bit."
