While promoting his new memoir, "Shot Ready," during a conversation with PEOPLE, Stephen looked back on a difficult conversation he had with Ayesha during their time in college, which ultimately made them a stronger unit.

“We had just started dating, or about a year and some change in, and I was deciding whether I was gonna go to the draft or not, and, you know, communication, trust, and the whole deal — being able to… I was going through it,” Stephen said.

For Curry, deciding between the two was especially challenging, as he wanted to seize his moment in the NBA, but he also wanted to finish his four years in school. “And I loved school and the experience and playing for Coach McKillop at Davidson," he said.

Torn between the two paths, Stephen explained that he went to Ayesha, whom he had been dating since their teenage years in North Carolina, for advice on how to move forward. However, her answer might not have been what Stephen was expecting to hear.

“She actually told me to stay in school because of how important finishing my degree was and the whole deal,” he said.

According to Stephen, it was an emotional conversation, but one that taught him a great deal about their relationship.

“That conversation and the emotions that I got to share really just established the fact that she was gonna be my biggest supporter no matter what I did,” Stephen shared. “And, you know, the idea that we’ve been through so many experiences throughout the years, I can go back to that foundation of support and being able to lean on each other through that conversation."

Stephen called the moment a "core memory" for not only him, "but also for our relationship."

And that's likely true for Ayesha, who shared a similar version of this story on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast, according to a previous report from The Blast.

Ayesha explained that she encouraged Stephen to stay enrolled at Davidson after he called her, "crying."

She went on to say that she believed earning a degree was more important at the time, plus, she admitted she wasn't as invested in sports as he was.

"I grew up in such an arts-driven family that sports outside of, like, Doug Flutie playing for the Buffalo Bills, like, wasn't a thing in my house," she said.

Ayesha And Stephen Take Marriage Seriously

Since that moment, Stephen and Ayesha have welcomed four children and celebrated over a dozen wedding anniversaries.

Ayesha has previously explained why her marriage to Stephen "always comes first," even before their kids.

"And that works for us because then you have two happy people raising the kids in the house. So the family sector in our lives always comes first," she said.

"And then honestly, it's just surrounding ourselves with people that are smarter than us and know what they're doing and can make the things run," she added. "And they allow us the space to be creative, and they allow us the space to truly show up however we choose to. And I think that's what's really worked for us."
