As Sweeney continues to be recognized for her influence, her rising profile hasn’t come without its share of backlash. The actress has been at the center of heated debates, most recently over her now-pulled American Eagle campaign that used the tagline, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”

The campaign itself was designed to highlight domestic violence awareness, with American Eagle pledging to donate all proceeds to Crisis Text Line. Still, it quickly drew fire from critics who argued the imagery leaned too heavily into hypersexualization and missed the mark. Some went even further, accusing the ad of echoing eugenics, a discredited and dangerous ideology historically tied to white supremacy. Although the brand has since pulled the spot from its official platforms, the clip continues to spread online, sparking ongoing debate about the responsibilities of marketing campaigns when addressing sensitive social issues.

This isn’t the first time Sweeney’s public image has collided with controversy. In 2022, photos from her mother’s 60th birthday party, where some guests were seen wearing MAGA-style hats and Blue Lives Matter apparel, sparked political backlash, with some accusing the star of holding right-leaning views. Sweeney has repeatedly denied those assumptions, telling critics to stop using an  “innocent celebration” to start an “absurd political statement.”
