The man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk is behind bars, and officials are now piecing together how the shocking crime unfolded. Tyler Robinson, 22, was booked into the Utah County Jail late Thursday night on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, and obstruction of justice. Robinson’s arrest was first disclosed by President Donald Trump on Friday morning. Utah Governor Spencer Cox later confirmed the news, noting that surveillance footage, Discord messages shared by Robinson’s roommate, and engravings found on bullet casings linked to a recovered rifle all pointed investigators to the suspect.

Cox revealed that Robinson had made comments to a family friend indicating he was responsible for Kirk’s killing. The suspect’s father, after recognizing his son in images released by police, worked with a local pastor to encourage Robinson to surrender peacefully. Now, according to new reports, law enforcement said Robinson threatened to take his own life rather than surrender to authorities after his father confronted him about the assassination.

Little is known publicly about the life of 22-year-old Robinson before his name was tied to the shocking assassination of Kirk. Social media posts that have since been deleted painted a picture of a typical upbringing in Washington County, Utah, with snapshots of birthdays, school milestones, and family gatherings.

Robinson spent his school years in the Washington County School District, where officials confirmed he attended Pine View Middle and Pine View High School from 2008 until graduating in May 2021. The arrest of Robinson has brought a sense of relief to Orem, Utah, where Kirk was gunned down earlier this week during a campus event at Utah Valley University. Even with Robinson in custody, law enforcement officers remained stationed across the university Friday, continuing to comb the area for evidence as prosecutors worked toward filing formal charges. But in the surrounding neighborhoods, the mood began to shift.

Residents who had been on edge for days started leaving their homes again, and witnesses to the chaos said the arrest was the first step toward healing. “I feel like there’s been this really heavy, dark weight pressed over my heart and soul for the last two days,” UVU alumnus Creighton Baird told local reporters. “It’s pure relief.”

An Empty Chair On 'The Charlie Kirk Show'

In a moving tribute, Kirk’s team left his chair empty as his podcast and radio program aired a special episode dedicated to his memory. Executive producer Andrew Kolvet opened the broadcast with a heavy heart, telling listeners the episode was meant to “commemorate our friend, our dear brother.”

“We wanted so badly to do this show for all of you today,” Kolvet said. “Here we are because Charlie would want us to be here. He would be upset if we weren’t here. And of course, we have left his chair open and empty because no one will ever fill it, nobody could ever hope to.”

Kolvet was joined by Jack Posobiec, Tyler Bowyer, and Blake Neff, each visibly emotional as they reflected on their late colleague.

“I know the seat looks empty, but it’s not,” Posobiec said. “The seat isn’t empty at all because in a way, Charlie’s the only thing we’re all thinking about right now.” Neff broke down as he credited Kirk with changing his life. “He basically gave me my life back," he said. "And I don’t know how to express how grateful I am for that.”

Beyond the political world and the media storm surrounding his death, Charlie Kirk was a husband and father. He leaves behind his wife, Erika Frantzve Kirk, and their two young children.
