“As soon as this shot rang out, everybody hit the deck, and then everybody started scattering and yelling and screaming, as you might imagine,” said Chaffetz. “I can’t say I saw blood. I can’t say I saw him get shot, but as soon as that shot went out, he fell back into his left and everybody hit the deck.”

Kirk was on UVU's campus as part of his "American Comeback Tour," presented by his organization, Turning Point USA. For those unfamiliar, TPUSA is a right-wing youth organization that helps support conservatives in high school and on college campuses.

Kirk had built a massive social media following over the years (7.4 million on Instagram), often debating with those on the opposite side of the political aisle on issues like gun violence, women's rights, and LGBTQ+ topics.

His appearances often draw large and passionate crowds, yet witnesses on the Utah Valley University campus said there was hardly any security in place for the event.

"I was expecting when I got here that I'd have to pass through some kind of security, but that just wasn't a thing," Tyler McGettigan told NBC News. "No one checked the barcode or the QR code. There was no checkpoint to get in. It was literally anyone could walk in if they wanted."

Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA Organization Speaks Out

Kirk's Turning Point USA organization offered a statement of its own to NBC News, confirming Kirk was "murdered by a gunshot."

"We ask that everyone keep his family and loved ones in your prayers," the organization said. "We ask that you please respect their privacy and dignity in this time."

Other users also offered their condolences and slammed the shooting, with one in particular posting, "We cannot allow a society where bullets replace dialogues or where violence becomes a response to political differences."
