Christina Applegate Gets Emotional About How Her Daughter Is 'Losing The Mom She Had' To MS

Christina Applegate remains open about her years-long battle with multiple sclerosis (MS) and its impact on her teenage daughter, Sadie. 

The Hollywood veteran got candid about how her degenerative illness has been a burden on her daughter since her 2021 diagnosis. She revealed the minor was emotionally exhausted; however, Sadie never stopped supporting her.

Christina Applegate welcomed her only child in January 2011 during her second marriage to Dutch musician Martyn LeNoble. She previously tied the knot to actor Johnathon Schaech in 2001, and their union ended in 2005 when the latter filed for divorce.

Applegate addressed the impacts of her MS battle on Sadie during a recent episode of her "MeSsy" podcast with co-host Jamie Lynn Sigler. She noted the degenerative condition was tough for her daughter to handle because she never saw her vulnerable side.

The TV personality explained that Sadie always knew her as healthy and active. Hence, watching someone she perceived as unbreakable struggle to get out of bed or do the tasks she used to do was heartbreaking for the teenager.

"It's broken her. She didn't know this. It was like losing the mom she had to this f-cking thing. And the more she's gotten older now, I think the more it's hurting her," Applegate lamented, per The Daily Mail. She noted she could see the pain in Sadie's eyes, but credited the minor for her resilience.

Applegate applauded Sadie for persevering despite the emotional draining situation, thanking her for remaining supportive, especially when they stepped out together.

"When we're out, she knows I'm having such a hard time because I have such anxiety about being out. And she's always got my arm," the actress raved.

She claimed Sadie was always attentive whenever they were outdoors, from helping her with her cane to ensuring Applegate pushed herself to get things done. At home, the doting mother noted the teenager would request she make her meals to get her downstairs.

Applegate previously opened up about how her MS battle had affected her daughter during a July appearance on Kelly Ripa's "Let's Talk Off-Camera" podcast. She recalled getting into a heated row with Sadie, who broke her heart by declaring, "I miss who you were before you got sick."

Applegate confessed that Sadie's retort broke her heart; however, she understood her daughter's pain. The actress noted she also missed who she was before she got sick, labeling it "such a loss" as every day was a never-ending battle with MS.

However, Applegate persevered thanks to her daughter, declaring, "She's the reason I'm still here and trying." Sadie had another reason to be worried about her mom weeks earlier when she experienced a health scare.

The Blast covered the story, reporting that Applegate had travelled to Europe to spend time with family and friends when she felt something was off on her way home. After getting off the plane, she immediately checked into the hospital and requested "every test" possible.

Applegate noted her instincts were spot on as she woke up with intense pain on her right side that had her "screaming." She suspected her appendix had burst and underwent an emergency CT at 2 AM.

Contrary to her suspicions, the test results revealed she had a kidney infection that spread from her right kidney to her left. Applegate noted doctors combated the situation by placing her on antibiotics.

Unfortunately, Applegate did not get immediate relief from the unbearable pain. She noted she was "holding in a bag [of] tears" that would sometimes break and cause her to weep in the arms of her nurse. Eventually, she overcame the ordeal and returned home.

Applegate wasn't the only one dealing with an emotionally draining condition in her home, as her daughter was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). The Blast shared that the entertainer broke the news on a June 2024 episode of her podcast.

She was joined by Sadie, who revealed she had experienced POTS symptoms for a long time; however, her complaints were dismissed as a teenager's antics. "Them not doing anything about it definitely hurt me physically and emotionally," Sadie lamented.

Applegate's daughter noted her complaints were mostly dismissed at school, but her mom confessed she was also guilty of not noticing her pain.

The podcaster apologized to Sadie for failing to recognize her situation, but the latter was grateful that her POTS diagnosis helped her connect with Applegate's MS battle.
