Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had a terrifying close call last year after a bullet was fired into his office while he was working late at the team’s practice facility.

The shocking incident occurred on May 4, 2024, around 12:15 a.m., when multiple shots were fired at the building.

One of those bullets pierced a window and struck a wall inside Andy Reid’s office, landing just 15 feet from the NFL coach’s desk.

Police confirmed that overnight security first noticed the damage after hearing a loud noise. Upon inspection, they found a bullet hole in a window, which led to the discovery of additional rounds hitting the facility.

In total, three shots struck the building, one entered Andy Reid’s office and embedded in the wall between his bathroom and office door, another struck an air conditioning unit outside, and a third hit the floor above Reid’s office.

Thankfully, no one was injured, but authorities classified the case as an aggravated assault since the building was occupied at the time.

Police Say Andy Reid Office Shooting Was 'Random'

Despite the terrifying nature of the incident, both the team and local police stressed that there is no indication Reid was targeted.

A spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department told PEOPLE that detectives are still awaiting forensic analysis to determine where the bullet was fired from.

An insider close to the situation told USA Today Sports that the team believes it was a random act of violence, not a directed attack on Reid or the Chiefs organization. While the shooting was initially kept under wraps, additional precautions were reportedly put in place following the incident, including the installation of bulletproof windows in Reid’s office to ensure his safety going forward.

At this time, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

NFL Safety Concerns In The Spotlight

The news of the bullet fired into Reid’s office comes as the NFL finds itself connected to another frightening incident, this one hundreds of miles away in New York City.

On July 29, 2025, a gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office building that also houses the NFL’s headquarters. New York City Mayor Eric Adams later confirmed that the shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, was attempting to target the league’s offices.

According to officials, Tamura drove cross-country before storming the 44-story tower on Park Avenue. However, he entered the wrong elevator bank and ended up on the floor occupied by Rudin Management instead of the NFL. That’s where he opened fire, tragically killing four people, including NYPD officer Didarul Islam, and leaving another victim hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators discovered a three-page note in his wallet in which he blamed the NFL for his struggles with CTE, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma in contact sports.

However, it was later reported that while Shane Tamura appeared to have set his sights on the NFL, investigators confirmed he never actually played professional football. Instead, it is believed he played high school football in California back in 2014.

A Deep Dive Into The Gunman’s Past

Although his background was initially clean enough to obtain a concealed carry permit in 2022, troubling red flags soon followed.

He was involved in two separate mental health incidents, including a 2023 casino arrest where police described him as “agitated” and attempting to grab a security officer. More recently, in June of this year, a tipster contacted police after Tamura was seen buying large amounts of ammunition at a gun show. Officers looked into it but reported no illegal activity, and his gun permit remained valid.

Using that same permit, officials say Tamura legally purchased a revolver from a Nevada gun store on June 12, just weeks before the Manhattan attack. Critics are now questioning whether the system failed to intervene, given the warning signs.
