Rihanna may be thriving in her life as a successful musician but as a child, she was forced to endure a violent father, as well as a strained home environment due to his abusive marriage to her mother.

During an interview with Rolling Stone in 2011, the 33-year-old R&B and pop singer from the Barbados, who rose to fame in 2005 after signing with Def Jam, opened up about her devastating relationship with her dad.

“I could tell when a conversation was getting too intense, when it was going to get physical,” she told the magazine. “And Fridays would be scary because he would come home drunk."

Rihanna Was Hit By Her Father On One Occasion

"He’d get paid, and half of it would go toward alcohol. He’d walk in the door, and it was all eyes on him,” Rihanna revealed.

According to Rihanna, who is most known for hits, including, "Rude Boy," "Diamonds," "What's My Name?," and "Umbrella," her father hit her just once.

Looking back at the devastating moment, Rihanna said she was just seven-years-old and begging to extend their beach day by 10 minutes. 

“He slapped me so hard,” she recalled. “I ran home with his handprint on me.

Rihanna Says Parents' Marriage Was 'Very Abusive'

"I couldn’t believe it," she continued. "My mother saw my face, how traumatized I was. You know how, when you know you did something wrong, and you deserve to get beat? This was out of nowhere.”

Rihanna also spoke of her turmoil-filled childhood during an interview with ABC that aired on "Good Morning America" and "20/20."

 "[My parents] had a very abusive relationship. My dad was the abuser. [He hit her] on numerous accounts," she shared.

Rihanna Got Used To The Violence Between Her Parents

Although Rihanna didn't want to use the word "normal" when it came to the violence between her parents, she acknowledged that she was never surprised by their encounters. 

"She never went to the hospital ... Domestic violence is not something that people want anybody to know," Rihanna shared.

Over the past several years, Rihanna has been linked to a number of other famous musicians, including Drake, Justin Timberlake, A$AP Rocky, Travis Scott, and Chris Brown. However, it was Rihanna's toxic romance with Brown that made the most headlines.

Chris Brown Pled Guilty To Assaulting Rihanna In 2009

Rihanna and Brown began dating in 2008 and split in 2009 after he was arrested for physically assaulting her. 

As fans of the songstress will recall, Brown's assault left Rihanna with a swollen and bruised face that led her to seek out medical attention.

Brown pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to five years of probation, community service, and counseling.
