David Archuleta Comes Out During Pride Month

David Archuleta, a former "American Idol" contestant, has announced to the world that he is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. 

The 30-year-old singer made the announcement in a lengthy Instagram post, admitting that he struggled with his sexuality on many fronts. 

His statement comes during Pride Month, a period during which tribute is paid to the LGBTQIA+ community in memory of the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Many other celebrities have also chosen this month to come out, including rapper Lil Nas X.

The sweet-faced singer has always been immersed in the entertainment world, with his mother working as a salsa singer and his father a jazz musician. He kicked off his reality competition career by winning the title Junior Vocal Champion on "Star Search" when he was just 12 years old. 

Since then, David has shot to fame as the runner-up in the 2008 season of "American Idol," releasing his debut album, Crush, shortly afterwards.

David, who came out to his family in 2014, said he was likely on "a spectrum of bisexual", as he experienced some attraction to both genders. He also noted that he doesn't "have too much sexual desires and urges as most people".

As a member of the Mormon faith, David acknowledged that while he "like(s) to keep to himself", he found it important to share his struggles with other religious people.

David makes it clear that he sees no reason a member of the LGBTQIA+ community cannot be religious. He has urged others to lend their support, stating: 

"I just invite you to please consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate to those who are LGBTQIA+, and those who are a part of that community and trying to find that balance with their faith which also is a huge part of their identity like myself."
