When Cody Simpson switched from music to swimming, he really dove in head first!
The “Masked Singer” winner and his girlfriend, Marloes Stevens, showed up to cheer on his swim friends and potential competitors at the Australian Swimming Olympic trials in Adelaide on Saturday, June 12. Simpson is set to compete for a spot at the Tokyo games later this week, but Marloes, Cody, and his mom caught the excitement of the first day of competition, where they cheered on swimmer Mack Horton among others. Unfortunately, Horton, the defending 400m gold medalist, did not qualify to compete in that event. Simpson looked enthusiastic about being there with his beau.
Cody is set to compete in the Men’s 100m Butterfly scheduled for Thursday, June 17. The singer has been working with former Australian Olympian Brett Hawke in California and has dedicated his life to the sport. So much so that he puts a lot of emphasis on his diet. The Olympic hopeful broke down his hearty and healthy diet earlier this week with GQ.
“I probably eat three to four times more than I did before,” Simpson revealed. “I try to eat fairly plant-based and pescatarian. If I eat red meat or something heavier, I find that the next day I don’t train as well.”
Simpson said that he started noticing a change to his upper body after training and said his events require the extra body mass to propel himself through the water.
Simpson often draws inspiration and motivation from the world’s greatest swimmer, Michael Phelps. He has a wonderful relationship with Phelps, and he claims to get stroke tips via text from the Olympic hero. Phelps seems to recognize Simpson’s drive.
“I think his mind is truly like a swim nerd’s,” Phelps told the NY Times.
It will be exciting to see how Cody does this year because he really has his eyes set on the 2024 Paris games.
