Cheryl Hines Opens Up About RFK Jr. Marriage Amid Sexting Scandal Rumors

Cheryl Hines is addressing the rumors, scandals, and political firestorms surrounding her marriage to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., starting with the one that nearly derailed their relationship.

At the time, it was reported that Olivia Nuzzi, then working for New York Magazine, had engaged in a “personal relationship” with Kennedy during his presidential campaign. Nuzzi later clarified the relationship was never physical, but admitted to “personal” communications that should have been disclosed.

After staying largely silent until now, Cheryl Hines is finally breaking her silence to address the "rumors" and "headlines" surrounding her marriage.

In a new Wall Street Journal interview, the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" star and her husband avoided directly addressing Kennedy’s sexting controversy with journalist Olivia Nuzzi, which erupted in September 2024, though they did mention the "rumors" and "headlines."

“I don’t think there’s any point to going through every rumor and headline to try to defend or explain it,” Hines said. “Bobby and I talk about everything… we’re really good friends, and we trust each other.”

Hines even teased that her upcoming memoir, "Unscripted," will reflect that their relationship has weathered the storm. “One would deduce that we love each other and are still married and whatever we’ve been through is behind us," she explained.

Despite presenting a united front in the recent interview, the couple’s body language wasn’t always in sync in the wake of the sexting scandal. The day after reports broke about Kennedy’s alleged “personal relationship” with Nuzzi, Cheryl Hines was photographed in Milan, notably without her wedding ring.

Her solo European outing came just ahead of her birthday, which she marked on Instagram Stories, with no sign of Kennedy in the celebrations.

Still, in the months since, Hines and Kennedy have made public appearances together and have spoken warmly of their marriage, signaling that, ring or no ring, they remain committed to weathering the storm side by side.

While the couple sidestepped the scandal, they did address the ongoing backlash Hines has faced since Kennedy left the Democratic Party, ran for president as an independent, then joined Donald Trump’s administration as secretary of health and human services.

Hines admitted she’s still puzzled by the reactions from former friends and strangers.

“At first, you’re thinking, Wow. Why are they so angry or disappointed?” she said. “Some people can’t even… talk about it. It’s really rather strange, actually.”

Cheryl Hines’ latest comments come months after reports claimed she had given Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a “strict ultimatum” in the wake of his alleged sexting scandal.

In March, The Daily Mail reported that the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" star demanded her husband relocate her from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., where he now serves as head of the Department of Health and Human Services under President Donald Trump.

According to an insider, Hines was adamant about the move, fearing that Kennedy’s powerful new position, and the attention it might attract from “Kennedy groupies," would lead to further trouble. “Cheryl doesn’t feel Bobby can be trusted one iota living on his own, in D.C., even part-time, with so many attractive women… so she’s given him a strict ultimatum… move me or else,” the source claimed.

The actress was said to still be grappling with the “emotional shock and pain” of the scandal, which reportedly left her blindsided.

This all comes after Olivia Nuzzi admitted to a personal relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Following the revelation, New York Magazine placed Nuzzi on leave, citing a breach of the publication’s conflict of interest and disclosure standards.

In a statement, the outlet explained, “Recently, our Washington Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi acknowledged to the magazine’s editors that she had engaged in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures."

They added, "Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign.”
