Sydney Sweeney's Role In New Biopic Criticized By Angry Netizens

The casting of Sweeney in a lesbian boxer biopic has sparked outrage among netizens, who are still enraged over her American Eagle ad and Republican ties.
The actress is expected to embody former professional boxer Christy Martin in a sports drama set to debut in September, and took to her Instagram page last month to share a bold shot from the film.
A week after the post went live, the comment section was overwhelmed with backlash at Sweeney and the producers after it was confirmed that she is a registered Republican in Florida.
"Cast a republican who hates individual expression to play a lesbian? Airpod body privilege," an angry user wrote.
A second individual commented, "Can we not put MAGAts in queer roles please???" while a third trolled, "You think your Republican buddies will see a lesbian movie?"
"Don't think your God (Trump) would be pleased about a republican playing a lesbian," one more person said.

More remarks in the comment section also called Sweeney's casting "disappointing" and "cringe," while some even demanded that the film be canceled altogether.
A couple of individuals also pointed out how Sweeney wasn't the right fit for the film, while referencing her controversial American Eagle ad.
One wrote, "A woman who aligns with this actual woman's lifestyle should've represented her. Not someone who consistently shows through her branding and her actions that she is not an ally."
"I feel so betrayed after watching your American Eagle ad," another individual commented, "Was looking forward to this movie as I was a Christy Martin fan. After recent news, I'll be passing."
Amid the backlash, the actress found support from some netizens who defended her casting.
"Bruh, y'all being over dramatic over a pair of jeans, they just pants, not the end of the world, y'all too busy complaining and commenting on her socials like y'all [are] obsessed with her," a user said.
Another user questioned, "Are you saying she is anti-gay just because she is a Republican?"
Sydney Sweeney's Republican Ties Were Exposed Amid American Eagle Ad Backlash

Sweeney's party affiliation was revealed after BuzzFeed reported that the "Euphoria" star had been registered as a Republican voter in Monroe County, Florida, on June 14, 2024.
Shortly after the revelation, President Donald Trump praised the actress when asked about the controversy surrounding her American Eagle ad.
"If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic," the billionaire mogul told the press on August 3, per USA Today.
According to reports, the actress's voter status was listed as "Active," indicating she may have participated in the election that led to Trump's return to office.
Trump Called The Actress's Jeans Campaign The 'Hottest Ad'

After his remarks to the press about loving Sweeney's American Eagle ad, Trump later doubled down on his comments in a post on Truth Social.
The president not only praised Sweeney again but also took a swipe at singer Taylor Swift, who has publicly endorsed Democrats, including Trump's former rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
"Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em, Sydney!" Trump said on his social media platform.
He then claimed that ever since he called out Swift, she stopped being "hot" and added that "being woke is for losers."

The insider also claimed that Sweeney is focused on her work, as she is set to reprise her role as high schooler Cassie Howard in season three of HBO's "Euphoria."
"She's focusing her energy on work, including being back on set with her Euphoria family," the source added.
Filming for the series began earlier in the year, but no premiere date has been revealed yet.
