Actress Sydney Sweeney was going viral long before her American Eagle campaign started drawing controversy.
The "Euphoria" star has faced criticism for her "Good Jeans" ad, as some have interpreted the "Good Genes" play on words to be representative of eugenics and white supremacy.

In several different ads, "The White Lotus" actress can be seen posing in a Canadian tuxedo, which consists of a denim jacket over denim jeans. However, the ads make it very clear that she is not wearing anything underneath the denim jacket.
In late July, White House communications director Steven Cheung took to social media to address the viral response to the American Eagle ad. Cheung called it “cancel culture run amok,” adding, “This warped, moronic, and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024. They're tired of this bullsh-t.”
Is She Sexualizing Herself?
Sex workers = heroes
Sydney Sweeney doing an ad = disgusting, focuses too much on her body, sexualizes herself too muchNow why is that, chat? pic.twitter.com/mtWrI3HJUj

The ad has become a hot topic of conversation. One Sydney Sweeney fan account wrote “oh my god” over a six-second clip of her ad, which features her lying back with her denim jacket shrugged off her shoulders. One user asked, “Does Sydney Sweeney do anything else besides sexualize herself?”
That led to Barstool Sports’ Jack Mac reposting the screenshot with the caption, “Sex workers = heroes. Sydney Sweeney doing an ad = disgusting, focuses too much on her body, sexualizes herself too much. Now, why is that, chat?”

Conservative TV personality Megyn Kelly has also weighed in on the debate over the ad, calling the reaction “absurd” and blaming the “lunatics on the Left” for prompting the controversy.
"She's being called a white supremacist by people who don't like her latest ad," Kelly said on The Megyn Kelly Show. "She's advertising jeans, and yet the lunatics on the Left think she's advertising white supremacy. This is obviously a reference to her body and not to her skin color, but the lunatic Left is going to do what the lunatic Left is going to do."
"They're upset because it's about who gets to be the face of America's Best Genes,” she continued, as per Entertainment Weekly. “They think it's no accident that they've chosen a white, thin woman because you're, I guess, not allowed to celebrate those things in any way, shape, or form. But they're completely ignoring the reference to her body, which is the thing she's famous for. It's just absurd."
What Is The Real Controversy?
This is problematic.
Sydney Sweeney’s jeans adverts and photos shouldn’t be celebrated, and we shouldn’t be cheering her on.
This is harmful to women and young girls, who now have an unreal expectation forced upon them that it’s ok to wear double denim and not be laughed at. pic.twitter.com/KYRmdinsK2

Another fan reposted a photo of the ad, calling it “problematic.” The comment begins, “Sydney Sweeney’s jeans adverts and photos shouldn’t be celebrated, and we shouldn’t be cheering her on.”
However, the tongue-in-cheek nature of their post is soon made clear when they add, “This is harmful to women and young girls, who now have an unreal expectation forced upon them that it’s ok to wear double denim and not be laughed at.”
One fan responded, “Personally, I am a big fan of double denim. Even triple and quadruple denim are ok with me,” prompting the user to reply, “Once you go past double, I think all bets are off. Triple and quadruple are somehow less egregious. Not sure how or why that’s the case.”
