Hollywood veterans Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway were a 15-minute walk from where the tragic mass shooting at an NYC skyscraper had occurred.
The "Devil Wears Prada" co-stars had been filming scenes for the highly anticipated sequel to their 2006 hit movie hours before the devastating incident. The perpetrator, Shane Tamura, killed four people in the violent crime and injured others.
Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, alongside co-star Stanley Tucci, reprised their roles in the comedy-drama. The movie was an adaptation of the 2003 novel written by Lauren Weisberger. It followed Andy Sachs (Hathaway), an aspiring journalist's life under her demanding editor, Miranda Priestly (Streep).
Meryl Streep & Anne Hathaway Were Close To The NYC Shooting

According to new reports, Streep, Hathaway, and Tucci were filming scenes at 1221 Avenue of the Americas in New York City. The area was approximately a 15-minute walk from where the shooting occurred.
The entertainers were working at least three hours before the shooting, with pictures capturing Streep rocking a smart gray suit and skirt combo to match her iconic fashion editor character. She was seen talking to Tucci, who rocked a dapper suit while Hathaway tried to keep up behind them.
According to The Daily Mail, the sequel followed a similar route as the first movie, with Hathaway still playing a Runway assistant under Streep's character as an icy magazine editor. Tucci also returned to star as Nigel Kipling, the Runway's art director.

The tragic mass shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue on Monday evening, inside a skyscraper. The shooter reportedly opened fire inside the lobby with a rifle equipped with a silencer at around 6:30 p.m.
A witness recounted their experience, claiming the gun "sounded like a barrage of shots …Like an automatic weapon. Like a high-capacity weapon." Another source echoed similar sentiments, noting a "guy came in with an assault rifle and started shooting."
The outlet also shared that two people, a man and a woman, were arrested at the scene. The man allegedly told officers, "Free Palestine, I'm not the active shooter," while the woman had a cut on her head. The gunman, Tamura, made his last stand at the skyscraper after taking four lives.

Law enforcement sources shed more light on the incident, telling TMZ, Tamura traveled from his residence in Las Vegas to NYC. He made it to Colorado on Saturday and reportedly drove through Nebraska and Iowa on Sunday before landing in New Jersey.
Tamura made it to Colombia around 4:24 p.m. Monday, and by 6:28 p.m., he unleashed several bullets inside the skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue on 52nd Street.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that Tamura arrived in a black BMW and entered the building while carrying an M4 assault-style rifle in his right hand.
Tamura immediately opened fire once he entered the lobby, killing NYPD officer Didarul Islam. He heartlessly killed a woman hiding behind a pillar and a security guard crouching under his desk. He shot another man in the lobby, wounding but not killing him, before heading to the elevator.

Although he went in guns blazing, Tamura surprisingly paused his assault at the elevator, where he allowed a woman to leave without attacking. Unfortunately, the temporary peace ended once he arrived at his destination on the 33rd floor.
The floor, home to Rudin Management, was filled with screams of terror when Tamura pumped bullets into the air, claiming the life of his fourth victim. Then he walked down the hallway and took his own life by shooting himself in the chest.
Besides the four lives lost in the violent crime, Tamura injured several others, including one person who was in critical condition at the hospital as of Monday evening. Another injured person has been identified as an employee of the National Football League.
Four more people suffered minor injuries during their attempts to escape bullets. Tamura's motives remain unclear; however, a source revealed he left a suicide note in his pocket. He reportedly claimed he suffered from CTE, a disease linked to head trauma, and also slammed the NFL in his letter.
Meryl Streep Sparked Dating Rumors Last Year

A year before the tragic incident, Streep made waves for her speculated relationship with her "Only Murders In The Building" co-star, Martin Short. The Blast covered the story, reporting that the pair's single status had fans wondering whether they were dating.
Although many desperately hoped the entertainers would become an item, a source shut down the rumors. The rep for Short stressed that their relationship was platonic, declaring: "Martin and Meryl are NOT dating, and are just very good friends -- nothing more."
Meanwhile, Streep's other co-star, Hathaway, made headlines in May 2025 for her stunning transformation. The Blast shared that she had fans speculating she had gotten plastic surgery after debuting a flawlessly snatched face at the Met Gala ceremony in New York City.
