Inside Sydney Sweeney's Campaign Ad With American Eagle

Sweeney's recent outing comes amid backlash due to her newest ad campaign with American Eagle.

On July 23, the retailer unveiled the actress as the face of their new fall denim campaign titled "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans."

The campaign featured multiple videos and pictures of Sweeney wearing different denim pieces she helped design, including a special pair called The Sydney Jean, which features cute butterfly designs.

The Sydney Jean is priced at $89.95 and will go directly to Crisis Text Line, a charity that offers confidential mental health support to victims of domestic abuse.

Despite the campaign's good cause, one video sparked a controversy.

Netizens Slam The American Eagle Campaign

Fans trooped to social media to call out the campaign as they felt the tagline "great jeans," which plays on the phrase "great genes," was racially insensitive.

Critics said it echoed old ideas of white superiority, especially since Sydney Sweeney is a blonde, blue-eyed woman.

"The Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad campaign is just modern day Nazi propaganda. Like it's wild how blatant it is. Things are weird right now, man," one person shared.

On TikTok, an account @vital_media_marketing also shared their thoughts.

"As it's panning up her body and on her face and her features, she's literally talking about her family tree and the genetics that have been handed down to her, her blonde hair and her blue eyes, and how great they are."

They continued, noting that "praising Sydney Sweeney for her great genes in the context of her white blonde hair, blue eye appearance" makes for "one of the loudest and most obvious racialized dog whistles we've seen and heard in a while."

On the other hand, some fans rushed to Sweeney's defense and praised the campaign ad, calling it genius.

"Jeans / Genes. The genius bit is that the phrase has two meanings. Apart from jeans, the phrase can also mean 'Sydney Sweeney has great Genes.' If you pair that phrase with beautiful models in jeans, both meanings are true," one fan shared.

Another commented, "Sydney Sweeney for American Eagle is such a perfect match. She's got that 'cool girl next door' vibe that makes even basic tees and jeans look iconic. After Euphoria and Anyone But You, she's basically mastered the art of making casual look iconic."
