A day after Angel Reese celebrated major career milestones—becoming the next cover athlete of NBA 2K26 and debuting her signature sneaker, the "Angel Reese 1s"—fresh controversy has followed.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III (RGIII) took to social media on July 10, 2025, to call out apparent racism directed at Angel Reese. In the process, however, he also struck a nerve among WNBA fans for bringing fellow basketball star Caitlin Clark into the mix.

Angel Reese Claps Back At RGIII For Allegedly Lying About Speaking To Someone In Her Inner Circle

RGIII, who played for the Cleveland Browns and Washington Commanders, made a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) discussing Reese.

In one, he shared a screenshot of a post from a user who depicted Reese as a monkey on the cover of NBA 2K, slamming the racism as unacceptable.

At the same time, he mentioned the growing rivalry between Clark and Reese and said that there's "clear basketball evidence that Angel Reese hates Caitlin Clark."

The former NFL player took it a step further, writing that "people in Angel's inner circle called me and told me I was right" about what he believes is Reese's disdain for Clark.

But Reese did not respond well to the podcaster's words. Hours later, she fired back at RGIII, accusing him of "lying."

Angel Reese Wastes No Time Clapping Back

Although Reese didn't address RGIII directly, the Chicago Sky star player shared a post that many believed was directed his way.

"lying on this app when everybody know the first and last name of everybody in my circle for clout is nastyyyy work," she wrote.

Reese's mom, also named Angel, shared a post of her own, telling RGIII to "stop with the [cap]."

"My daughter's 'circle' is so small & tight so I'd be interested 2 know who called U ... Whomever U say 'called' U is not in her circle 2 speak on her feelings towards a media/fandom made up beef. Just stay on that side bc the doors are closed over here," she wrote.

Fans Fire Back At RGIII And Defend Angel Reese

Reese fans also jumped into the mix, criticizing RGIII for fueling what they see as unwarranted hate and negative attention sent the 23-year-old's way.

"You are an even bigger loser than I thought," a user wrote. "If you wanted to denounce the pic, just do that. Instead, you get on here with all that extra BS. You on here contributing to the online hate of this 23-year-old woman, but on Twitter trying to play victim. Get some help."

Another user shared something similar, writing, "You are a disgusting liar and desperate for attention. No one in Angel's family called you. You have no morals or integrity. May hate and bitterness be your downfall forever."

A third fan blasted RGIII for "clout chasing and hating" on Reese, adding that such behavior would be his "downfall."

UNRIVALED

RGIII's claim that Reese "hates" Clark comes weeks after the WNBA investigated allegations of racism directed toward Reese during an Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky game on May 16, 2025.

"The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms," the league wrote in a statement. "They have no place in our league or in society."

"We are aware of the allegations of inappropriate fan conduct during yesterday’s game, and we are working closely with the WNBA to complete their investigation. We stand firm in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all WNBA players," it read.

Days later, on May 27, the league announced its findings from the investigation and said it was unable to substantiate the allegations.

A day before RGIII's post on X, Reese celebrated two special milestones in her career: becoming an NBA 2K cover athlete and the debut of her signature sneaker, the AR1.

According to The Blast, Reese opened up about how special it was for her to see herself on the cover of a popular video game.

"I'm so blessed to be honored," the Chicago Sky star said. "I was just super excited…just trying to be the first of many and have many young kids and young women look up to me and know that they can do the same things I'm doing."

Regarding her all-white, shimmery sneaker, which is being named the "Diamond Dust" colorway, Reese explained why the name holds such meaning for her.
