Five years after stepping away from royal life and relocating to the United States, Harry is reportedly still trying to find his footing.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News Digital that the prince is essentially "living in exile," and may be wrestling with lingering regrets.

"Undoubtedly, he has some regrets. He appears to have lost touch with many of his friends and, of course, there is the royal rift," Fitzwilliams said.

He added: "In recent months, it has been [his wife] Meghan [Markle] who has fronted things. Her launch of lifestyle products has been backed by Netflix… Harry has picked up a couple of awards, but the fact that 76,000 signed a petition when he received the Pat Tillman Award was a warning that many Americans view the couple with disdain."

Royal historian Marlene Koenig made similar statements about Harry's alleged struggle to find his footing in a separate interview with Us Weekly.

Koenig noted that the duke has found it difficult to carve out a meaningful role for himself in the U.S.

"He was always expected to play a supportive but not a supporting role," she explained.

Koenig added, "He may be comfortable in his California home with his wife and two adorable children, but what he hasn't found yet is the comfort of success outside [of] home."

Royal expert Hilary Fordwich reinforced this view of Harry seemingly struggling, telling Fox News Digital that the prince's post-royal journey has been marked by confusion and lack of purpose.

"Prince Harry's life is characterized by frustration, lack of clear achievement, and his persistent struggle to carve out anything either lucrative or fulfilling," she said.

She also highlighted the contrast between Harry and Meghan's trajectories.

"Nothing he has done has delivered any long-term satisfaction, independence, or been met with any universal support, or he would have stuck with it. His popularity has plummeted in the polls on both sides of the Atlantic," the expert said.

Fordwich added that while Meghan Markle's lifestyle brand continues to gain traction, Harry is still searching for a prominent role of his own in California.

"Those who know him report he's homesick and feels out of place in California," Fordwich claimed. "His social circle in California is limited further, making him miss his old friends, who avoid visiting him, as well as his military connections."

Royal commentator Amanda Matta also weighed in, telling Us Weekly that while Harry doesn't seem to regret stepping down as a senior royal, he is discouraged by how his relationships with family members have "deteriorated."

In contrast, Meghan is reportedly focused and moving forward with her "ventures and identity outside the royal bubble."

Fitzwilliams added further perspective, saying that "almost all of Harry's achievements, such as Invictus, Sentebale - though he has now stepped down from the board – and WellChild, were before he married Meghan."

He said: "The Invictus Games are undoubtedly remarkable and may lead to a form of royal reconciliation. [But] his most publicized activities with Meghan have been their 2021 interview with Oprah, the Netflix docuseries' Harry & Meghan' in 2022, and his memoir 'Spare,' all of which did considerable damage to the royal family."

Fitzwilliams acknowledged that "There is no doubt he [Harry] and Meghan appear happy bringing up their two children in Montecito." However, he pointed out that recent efforts, like "Harry's 2023 'Heart of Invictus' and 2024's 'Polo' for Netflix were not widely watched. His appearance in Meghan's ['Baby Mama Dance'] video looked so second-rate."

Experts Say Prince Harry Must Move Beyond Battles To Rebuild Reputation

Referencing Harry's public frustration over security issues shared during a BBC interview, Fitzwilliams added that the prince's behavior can sometimes come across as "edgy and impetuous."

In his view, had the couple "remained senior royals, though there were undoubtedly deep stresses, they would have had a role in soft power and affecting world events."

British broadcaster and royal photographer Helena Chard echoed the sentiment, suggesting Harry has lost focus.

Speaking to the publication, she remarked, "He's taken his eye off the ball. He has spent five-plus years embroiled in legal and family upsets. There are consequences for his battles. He needs to rebuild his reputation and concentrate on purposely moving forward."

Chard believes Harry needs to shift gears if he wants to reclaim a sense of purpose and public trust.

"Rather than spending time monitoring his charity endeavors and building a successful brand… he chose to fight like a dog with a bone for everything he believed he was entitled to," the expert stated.

"I'm sure Harry is regretful that he has given so much time to angry battles," Chard continued." He loves his wife and children and is passionate about supporting injured veterans. It's time for him to keep his head down and excel in all that he loves."
