Fans of “The Handmaid’s Tale” have watched the friendship between June (Elisabeth Moss) and Janine (Madeline Brewer) develop for the past three seasons.
Season 4 hasn’t been shy about picking off all of the handmaids June has gotten close to, and now it seems that Janine might just be one more name on that ever-growing list.
But is Janine really gone for good? The 29-year-old actress, who has gathered more than 336k followers on Instagram, weighs in and teases Janine’s possible return…or lack thereof.
Friends or Allies?

Although Janine always followed June’s orders in the past, the “Orange Is the New Black” alum revealed that Janine was finally finding her own voice, which culminated in what fans are affectionately dubbing, “The Milk Tank Scene.”
“Janine’s finally at a point with June where she’s like, ‘What are we doing? I’ve never questioned you before but right now we were supposed to be safe,” Brewer shared.
“You were the only person who knew where we were going and now, I’m stuck in a milk tank with you. And you have no idea what’s going on. How the h–l did we get here? Give me something.'”
Fight or Flee?

Although the two eventually make it to a shelter, the two find themselves at odds again when June wants to leave and continue the fight against Gilead. however, Janine just wants a chance to try to start over and rebuild her life.
After a tearful goodbye, June eventually turns around to see Janine following after her, a decision that proved to be controversial among fans.
“I don’t think she ever really wanted to leave June,” Brewer explained. “She loves June and she wanted to stay with her. She realized that ‘I have to see this through to the end with my friend, whatever [the] end is.’ Janine means what she says, ‘I feel safer when we’re together.’ Because they’ve been safer to a degree this whole time.”
Separated

The last we saw June and Janine, they had made it to the front lines just before an impending bomb strike. After the two are knocked out by an explosion, June wakes up to find herself face to face with her old friend Moira (Samira Wiley) but Janine is nowhere to be found.
Although the show has never been shy about killing off beloved characters, Brewer teased, “We see Janine by the end of the season. It’s not at a place that we want her to be, but such is life.”
A Special Relationship

Even if the pair are never reunited on screen, the “Cam” actress still values their special relationship.
“June is such a mother figure even though I look at the two of them like sisters,” Brewer said. “It’s a really interesting dynamic between the two of them being such good friends but then having this maternal kind of exchange and Janine being a mother herself. It’s very complicated but it’s very special. It’s unlike any other relationship there is on the show.”
