Is Ellen DeGeneres Ending Her Show Over Toxic Work Accusations?

It's official, Ellen DeGenereshas announced that she will be ending her daytime talk show Ellen in 2022. After what would be the show's 19th season. Since the announcement was made a lot of speculation started brewing over what exactly led to the demise of the show.

In reality, the problems for the show and Ellen's personal image have been coming from all directions. Therefore, it's likely that there was no one problem that took the show down completely. Although, the stories about the show being a toxic place to work and there being bullying and sexual harassment behind the scenes certainly didn't help!

Ellen is basically trying to downplay the idea that any of the scandals revolving around the show or the questions of her personal behavior had anything to do with the demise. Essentially she is saying that the contract was up and that she was not looking to continue. She mentioned,

"If I was quitting the show because of that, I wouldn't have come back this season. So, it's not why I'm stopping but it was hard because I was sitting at home, it was summer, and I see a story that people have to chew gum before they talk to me."

Another one of the reasons that people are pointing to as to why Ellen is walking away is that the show isn't tremendously popular anymore. That has made it harder for the show to attract sponsors. When the COVID pandemic hit a lot of media businesses that rely on sponsors were hit hard.

Combine that with the fact that many celebrities seemed to be avoiding the show because of the allegations against Ellen and you're in a downward spiral when it comes to generating money.

When you've been doing a show for almost twenty years there are bound to be some people that don't agree with you. However, with Ellen, some of the staff that was with her for years talk about the "toxic workplace" mantra that the show obtained. There seems to be quite a bit of truth to the stories.

For example, former Ellen show DJ, Tony Okungbowa, who was on the show for around 10 years mentioned,

"I did experience and feel the toxicity of the environment and I stand with my former colleagues in their quest to create a healthier and more inclusive workplace as the show moves forward.”

Hate usually spreads faster than love, particularly on Twitter. However, many in the Twitterverse are more than happy that Ellen is calling it quits. Pointing the finger directly at the famous or infamous Dakota Johnson interview as essentially the day that the Ellen Show died.

This was one of the first times that Ellen was called out publically for her behavior. In many ways, it sparked a lot of the subsequent allegations that questioned Ellen's behavior in general. Whether she quit because she needed a bigger challenge or not, it's clear the show wasn't at the peak of its powers anymore.
