The singer experienced fame early and went on to win two Grammy Awards in 1997 at just 14 years, making her the youngest person ever to win a Grammy at the time.

She clinched two awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Despite the impressive pace of her career, Rimes fell victim to unfair scrutiny, which placed immense pressure on her self-esteem and mental health.

American Songwriter detailed that growing up as a child star in the public eye left Rimes fighting battles she did not know she had. However, her life began to change when she married Eddie Cibrian and became a stepmother to his two kids.

She reminisced on the joys of watching the kids grow and settle into the reality of a blended family. Rimes recalled how her new normal healed a part of her that was damaged due to her rough childhood.

"I've loved seeing the kids have a childhood. I didn't have that. And so to be able to give that to someone else has been really special," the star said.

Her journey to rehab also contributed to her healing because, for the first time in her career, she knew how it felt to spend quality time alone. She described rehab as the beginning of her "wellness, self-exploratory" journey.

The world had grown accustomed to Rimes belting out tunes as a country artist, and when she decided to explore other genres, she was met with harsh criticism. Rimes explained to PEOPLE that trying out other sounds was not the norm, especially as a country artist. In her words:

"Country then really thought that you were running away from them and they were gonna disown you — which happened!"

The 42-year-old wondered why the industry would want to restrict anyone, especially her, as a child star who was bound to experience personal and professional changes at the time.

Now, the singer is glad the boundaries have been pushed, and the music industry is more receptive to singers exploring genres and switching sounds. She remains excited for artists who get to do whatever they want. For her and her adventurous nature, Rimes declared:

"I guess I've always been a bit of an outsider and a rebel in that way of, 'I'm going to sing music I love to sing.' But this place where I'm in now, I feel very settled; it feels really good."

From braving the pains of a dental mishap to breaking barriers in music, LeAnn Rimes remains an icon!
