Olivia Wilde, an American actress and director, has recently drawn the fire of LGBTQIA+ fans for insensitive comments she made about coming out.

Wilde became a household name after playing the enigmatic bisexual "Thirteen" on the Fox medical drama "House" for several seasons.

She has seemingly given up on acting after she received critical acclaim for directing the Netflix hit "Booksmart" and has amassed 3.9 million followers on Instagram.

What Did She Say?

The "Cowboys & Aliens" actress compared her career leap from actress to director as "coming out of the closet."

“I almost feel like someone who’s come out of the closet," she said in an unearthed interview. "There’s this feeling of honesty about what I really want to do. It’s a level of comfort that comes from being true to yourself that I haven’t felt in a long time.”

The LGBTQ+ community immediately took issue with comparing a life-changing, and potentially dangerous, decision to come out, to that of making a career switch.

The backlash that surfaced on social media came swift and strong as snippets of the old interview went viral. Many of the comments indicated disdain for the inappropriate comparison.

“These hurtful words actually came out of your mouth," one person tweeted. "How dare you invalidate the LGBTQIA+ community like that."

“Comparing a change in jobs to coming out of the closet, how insensitive could you be?” another asked.

“I’m so upset," a fan stated. "As a queer woman I never expected this from someone I have looked up to for years."

More seemed to sum up the sentiments of many, writing, “I’m hurt and this kind of ‘nonchalant’ behaviour and language is deep rooted homophobia that people think is laughable when it isn’t. Do better Olivia Wilde."

Wilde, 37, recently raised eyebrows when she ended her 10-year relationship with "Horrible Bosses" actor Jason Sudeikis, 45.

After meeting in 2011, the pair became engaged 2 years later and have 2 children together: a son, Otis, 6, and a daughter, Daisy, 4.

According to reports, Sudeikis broke off the relationship after he discovered Wilde was sneaking around with new beau Harry Styles, 27, behind his back on the set of her new film.

It seems Wilde and the former "One Direction" boybander met on the set of her film, "Don't Worry, Darling,” in which he is playing the lead role.

Rumors of their relationship were brought to light after they were photographed together at a wedding in California last January, and the pair seem to have taken their relationship public, even enjoying a cozy date night together at a London pub.
