Ivan McClellan’s journey into the world of Black rodeo began in 2015 when he found himself at a Black rodeo in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
What started as an invitation from a friend turned into a passion for McClellan, who found himself captivated by the seamless blend of Western culture and Black heritage.
In the years since, McClellan has turned that passion into 8 Seconds Rodeo, America's premiere Black rodeo and cultural celebration, now a movement in its own right.
Ivan McClellan Talks ‘Showdeo’ Revolution

“I had never seen the West fused with Black culture in such a real way,” McClellan told The Blast exclusively. “It was like seeing the heart of cowboy culture intertwined with the vibrancy of Black music, food, and energy. I became obsessed.”
That obsession eventually led to McClellan launching his own rodeo, something he had never imagined himself doing. “I had never planned a birthday party at the time,” he laughed. “But I dove headlong into it and executed that first rodeo in about 6 months.”
Unlike any other, 8 Seconds Rodeo is a dynamic spectacle that blends sports, music, and community in a way that appeals to both rodeo enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
“I call it a ‘showdeo,’” McClellan said. “It’s just as much about the entertainment as it is about the sport. We have sing-alongs, dance contests, and we keep the energy up the entire time. We want even the person who has no clue about rodeos to walk away having a great time.”

The reception to 8 Seconds Rodeo has been overwhelmingly positive.
“When we first started, no one knew us,” McClellan admitted. “But Cowboys came from all over to support us, and they still do. The community feels proud of what we’re building.”
And the audience? McClellan says about 80% of those who attend have never been to a rodeo before. Yet, many leave feeling embraced and excited to return, a testament to the inclusive atmosphere McClellan has cultivated.
“It’s about making sure there’s no gap in the performance,” McClellan added. “Everything is seamless, fun, and welcoming.”

This year, 8 Seconds Rodeo has teamed up with Crown Royal for the second year in a row, to support a powerful initiative, the Hats Off Grant. The grant was created to provide financial support to up-and-coming Black Cowboys and Cowgirls, helping them compete at a higher level.
"Crown Royal has long been a sponsor in the Black rodeo community, and their support means the world," McClellan told The Blast. “This grant is going to change the game for whoever receives it. It's about providing opportunities to make the path smoother for the next generation.”
As the official whisky sponsor of 8 Seconds Rodeo, Crown Royal is extending its commitment to rodeo culture by awarding a $10,000 grant to a deserving athlete at the upcoming 8 Seconds Rodeo in Portland. This generous contribution will help cover the costs of competition, including equipment, training, travel expenses, and more.
“The Hats Off Grant is about honoring the legacy of Black Cowboys and Cowgirls and ensuring that the next generation has the resources they need to rise to the top,” McClellan explained. “It’s going to allow these athletes to compete at a level they may not have been able to before.”

McClellan also highlights the importance of investing in the future.
"I’ve spent years documenting and celebrating the people in this culture who are forging their path," he said. “This isn’t just about celebrating the past. It’s about investing in the future.”
For those who’ve never been to a Black rodeo, McClellan wants 8 Seconds to be a place where everyone feels at home.
“I want them to leave with a sense of belonging and an experience they can’t wait to relive. And I want them to continue supporting Black rodeos across the country.”
He emphasizes that the rodeo is a cultural celebration that blends music, fashion, and the thrill of rodeo sports, making it accessible to all. “It’s about blending the best of both worlds, traditional rodeo and Black culture," he said while speaking to The Blast.
Ivan McClellan’s Advice For Young Black Cowboys

As for the future, McClellan has one simple piece of advice for young Black Cowboys and Cowgirls hoping to make their mark in the sport.
“Take it step by step. Learn the ins and outs of your craft. It’s going to be difficult, but it’s possible.” McClellan added. “There are a lot of kids out there with a hoofprint on their heart, and they come to our rodeo and get activated. Build it a little bit every day, and you'll get exactly where you want to be.”
8 Seconds Rodeo is more than just an event, it’s a celebration of culture, community, and the spirit of Black Cowboys and Cowgirls. Thanks to Ivan McClellan’s vision and Crown Royal’s continued support, it’s a celebration that’s only just getting started.
