What Is Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Manchild’ Really About?

On Thursday, the “Feather” singer explained why she wrote the song while sharing some behind-the-scenes looks at her music video. She opened the carousel with a photo of her wearing blue panties along with a lacy white top that was tied in the front to show off her taut tummy.

She explained how she wrote the song on “a random Tuesday” with close collaborators Amy Allen and Jack Antonoff shortly after she finished her sixth album, “Short n’ Sweet.”

“It ended up being the best random Tuesday of my life,” she wrote. “Not only was it so fun to write, but this song became to me something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life.”

She went on to say that the song is like the “embodiment of a loving eye roll” and “feels like a never-ending road trip in the summer.” She explained that this is why she wanted to release the song now, “so you can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long!”

Sabrina Carpenter Wows In Her New Music Video

Fans who watched the YouTube video immediately took to the comments to praise her “stunning” ensemble. “I just counted THIRTY SEVEN outfit changes... your stylist needs a raise,” one fan commented.

“The stylist needs a raise, so many outfits, and Sabrina looks stunning in all of them!” another follower agreed.

“Jesus, this is the most cinematic and complex music video I have ever seen. Old great classics don't even come close. This is on another level of brilliance,” a third fan chimed in.

Another listener praised the thought behind the video, writing, “Okay, I get it: each car is a relationship—chaotic, makes no sense, sometimes full of danger—and jumping out of one car into another is Sabrina jumping into a new, uncertain (but almost predictably wild) relationship.”

"You can't argue that this isn't one of her best music videos yet," another fan wrote while several followers begged her to release a new album.

Some followers thought that the song was throwing shade at her ex-boyfriend, Barry Keoghan, with lyrics like, “Never heard of self-care / Half your brain just ain't there / Manchild, why you always come a-runnin', takin' all my lovin' from me?”

Sabrina and Barry were first spotted grabbing dinner together in Los Angeles in December 2023. Their relationship lasted for about a year before the two seemingly went their separate ways. In December 2024, a source told People magazine that the former couple had “decided to take a break” because “they are both young and career-focused.”

Barry Keoghan Starred In Her ‘Please Please Please’ Music Video

Fans were disappointed by the split, as their chemistry was undeniable in her popular “Please Please Please” music video. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning in October 2024, Sabrina insisted that it was her “not-even-biased opinion,” not their relationship, that led to his casting.

"I was like, 'Who's the greatest actor that I can find for this music video?' And he was next to me in a chair,” she added. “And he was so excited about it.”

Some fans also believe that “Manchild” could be about a rumored fling that Sabrina had with singer Shawn Mendes in 2023; however, she later insisted that the two were not dating after they were seen together in Los Angeles during an interview with the Dutch television show “RTL Boulevard.”
