In a candid interview with The Times, Sweeney shared that in 2013, when she was 16, her family lost their home in Washington and moved into a one-bedroom hotel room in Burbank, California. She lived there with her mother, Lisa, a criminal defense attorney, her father, who worked in hospitality, and her younger brother.

While the space was cramped, with no kitchen or balcony, and a pull-out sofa bed doubling as sleeping quarters, Sweeney recalled trying to find the light in a tough moment.
