Dolly Parton is speaking candidly about the quiet heartbreak behind her husband Carl Dean’s passing and the private health battle she chose to keep out of the spotlight.

The two were famously private throughout their nearly 60-year marriage, rarely making public appearances together.

Most photos of the couple come from Parton’s own personal collection, and fans have long respected the couple’s choice to keep their love story out of the limelight.

Now, Dolly Parton is opening up about the more private moments of her marriage, including the time leading up to Carl Dean’s passing.

In a new interview with The Independent published Wednesday, the 78-year-old country music legend revealed that Dean had been “ill for quite a while” prior to his death at age 82 on March 3.

“I really feel his presence,” she said. “I just try to go on, because I know I have to. And he was ill for quite a while, and part of me was at peace that he was at peace and not suffering anymore. But that still doesn’t make up for the loss and the loneliness of it.”

Although Parton has not confirmed the nature of her husband’s illness, sources close to the singer have said that Dean had reportedly been battling Alzheimer’s disease in recent years. “She spent a lot of time with Carl, especially near the end,” a friend shared. “His eyes would still light up when Dolly entered the room.”

Even during the most challenging days, Parton stayed by his side, holding his hand and sharing treasured memories from their nearly six decades together. “It was very difficult for her, but she didn’t want him to be afraid or feel alone,” the friend adds.

Inside Dolly And Carl's Private Love Story

Parton and Dean’s journey began in an unassuming Nashville laundromat when she was just 18 years old.

They wed two years later in a small, intimate ceremony, and while Dolly went on to become one of the most iconic figures in music, Dean, whom she often described as “completely different” from her, chose a quiet life far from the spotlight. “He’s not in show business,” she once said. “He’s never wanted to be.”

Instead, the couple built a life filled with simplicity and love, taking leisurely road trips through Tennessee and Kentucky and finding joy in just being together. Though they never had children, Parton often spoke of how deeply fulfilled she felt in her marriage.

In 2016, the pair renewed their vows in a private celebration at their Nashville home to mark their 50th anniversary.

Dean’s influence on Parton’s career extended far beyond their private life, even inspiring one of her most iconic songs.

In a 2008 interview with NPR, Parton revealed that her classic hit “Jolene” was inspired by a real-life encounter with a bank teller who had taken a noticeable interest in her husband.

“She got this terrible crush on my husband,” Parton recalled with a laugh. “And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention.”

What started as playful teasing between the couple became the foundation for a song that would go on to define a generation.

“It was kinda like a running joke between us. When I was saying, ‘Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money.’”

Though the song’s haunting melody and pleading lyrics suggest heartbreak, Parton insists the story behind it was far more lighthearted. “It’s really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one," she said.

The “Jolene” singer announced Dean’s passing in March, noting that he had died in Nashville and would be laid to rest in a private ceremony.

"Carl and I spent many wonderful years together," Parton said in a statement at the time. "Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years."

In a separate statement, Parton wrote, "He is in God's arms now, and I am okay with that. I will always love you."

Now, as she navigates life without the man who was her anchor through decades of fame, Parton says she’s holding close to their memories and the lasting bond they shared.
