The dramatic conclusion only intensified anticipation for "The Last of Us" Season 3, which HBO had already renewed in April 2025, just ahead of Season 2's premiere. The early green light came as no surprise, especially after co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin told GQ that the expansive narrative of "The Last of Us: Part II" video game couldn't be fully explored in one season.

Season 2 followed Ellie's grief-fueled quest for revenge following the shocking death of Joel (Pedro Pascal) in Episode 2, a scene that left fans heartbroken. Though Joel was gone, he made a reappearance in Episode 6 via a flashback, offering a bittersweet glimpse of the bond that once grounded the story.

As Ellie and her partner Dina (Isabela Merced) tracked Abby across Seattle, the path was marked by bloodshed. Ellie killed three of Abby's allies in the Washington Liberation Front: Nora (Tati Gabrielle), Mel (Ariela Barer), and Owen (Spencer Lord), leaving Abby more desperate and dangerous than ever.

"We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of," Mazin said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. "The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals. We look forward to continuing the story of 'The Last of Us' with season three."

Although HBO has yet to reveal official plot details for season 3 of "The Last of Us," cast member Catherine O'Hara offered a key hint during a May 2025 interview with Variety.

O'Hara, who plays therapist Gail Lynden, confirmed that the upcoming season will focus heavily on "the Abby story."

"There's another side to this story that we have yet to really delve into," co-creator Craig Mazin said during a press conference following the finale. "There's no question that Abby is the hero of her story."

With the future of several characters left hanging in the balance and no clear indication of who fired the final shot, fans are already speculating about what Season 3 could bring.
