In a revealing interview on Apple Music’s "The Zane Lowe Show," the 32-year-old "Flowers" singer shared that she suffers from a “very large polyp” on her vocal cord, which is an abnormal growth that she credits for her distinctive raspy voice.

While the condition has contributed to the texture that defines her sound, it also makes live performances incredibly difficult.

“It’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on,” Cyrus explained, adding that although her voice has benefited from the polyp’s unique tone, the physical toll it takes is substantial. “It’s a part of my unique anatomy. It’s given me a lot of the tone and texture that has made me who I am, but it’s extremely difficult to perform with.”

She Claims Her Vocal Condition Is A 'Blessing'

While Miley Cyrus admitted her hard-partying lifestyle in her early 20s didn’t help, she was clear that it wasn’t the cause of the polyp.

“Being 21 and staying up and drinking and smoking and partying after every show does not help,” Cyrus said. “But also in my case, it does not cause it. So my voice always sounded like this." Still, she considers the condition a “blessing” that makes her voice one-of-a-kind. "It’s a part of my unique anatomy," she said.

However, the risk of surgery, which could potentially change how she sounds, has kept her from seeking a permanent fix.

Cyrus also noted that any future tour would need to be “sustainable,” as she doesn’t lip-sync and finds the energy required for full-scale performances taxing.

The pop icon also reflected on a particularly harrowing moment that pushed her physical limits.

During her 2023 NBC New Year’s Eve special co-hosted with Dolly Parton, Cyrus revealed that she went through with the show despite suffering from an undiagnosed medical emergency of a ruptured ovarian cyst.

“I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with Lorne [Michaels],” she shared. “We didn’t know exactly what was going on… It was extremely excruciating, and I did the show anyway.”

The pain was so intense that Miley Cyrus said she seriously considered quitting music altogether.

The singer had previously spoken about a separate experience while filming a low-budget music video, which almost cost her a leg, further underscoring just how much she’s been through behind the scenes.

"My leg began to disintegrate… around the kneecap area," she told Jimmy Kimmel last week. "And then the doctor goes, 'Do you have any idea why you would have such a brutal infection on your kneecap?'"

Miley Cyrus then admitted that the doctor couldn't believe his eyes, calling the infection "disgusting." "It was bad," she added.

Miley is finding a new way to connect with fans, without ever stepping on stage.

With touring off the table due to health concerns, the pop star has transformed her upcoming album "Something Beautiful" into a full-length cinematic experience, describing the visual project as a “one-of-a-kind pop opera.”

“The film is my way of touring,” the former Disney Channel star explained. “That’s why I’m putting it into theaters, because it’s something you can watch night after night. You get to discover it, and you get to feel like you’re part of a performance, but I don’t have to tax myself in that way.”

Set to make its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival this June, "Something Beautiful" will showcase 13 original tracks in a stunning, immersive format designed to give fans the feeling of a live show, without Cyrus needing to hit the road. The project blends high-concept visuals with powerful storytelling, offering a deeply personal alternative to a traditional tour.

And while fans continue to hope for a future tour, Cyrus has made it clear that her health comes first.
