According to a report by the New York Post, industry sources have revealed why Nicholson is hardly seen in public.

This comes months after the 88-year-old actor attended the "Saturday Night Live" 50th anniversary.

Prior to the special event, Nicholson had kept himself from the spotlight; now, insiders claim it may be for health reasons and a desire to be remembered as he was during the peak of his career.

"He doesn't like to be seen much in public now," a source said. "I saw him at the Carlyle, and he was a little wobbly."

"Part of his appeal in the past was his extravagant character and lifestyle. But that all catches up with you after a while," the source continued, adding, "I think Jack and his inner circle prefer that you remember him as he was."

The "Anger Management" actor still makes it out occasionally and has been pictured at multiple public outings in L.A., including basketball games and other special events in the company of his children, Lorraine and Ray.

"We've always gotten along," he said in a 2010 interview with AARP The Magazine. "I want to be inspirational, or some kind of good influence on them, without overburdening them. It's their time of life to find out who they are."

Nicholson unceremoniously pulled the plug on his acting career and hasn't starred in any movie since featuring on "How Do You Know" co-starring Reese Witherspoon.

In a 2023 chat with People Magazine, "Terms of Endearment" director James L. Brooks admitted he was hopeful that Nicholson would agree to act again.

Amid his new reclusive lifestyle, Nicholson still cares a lot about his loved ones, including his ex-partner, Anjelica Huston.

In a recent chat with People, Huston revealed that Nicholson called her at the start of the L.A. fires to offer her his house to stay after she was forced to evacuate her ranch in the Sierra Nevada mountain range during the devastating incident.

The pair famously dated on and off from 1973 to 1990, but their relationship ended that year after he fathered a child with actress Rebecca Broussard.

"The phone just rang out of nowhere, and it was him," Huston said about Nicholson's call during the wildfires. "It's always a comfort when he calls… It was heartbreakingly sweet. I've gone back over it several times in my head, and I think next time I'd accept the invitation."

Despite their split, Nicholson and Huston have remained friendly with each other even though they don't see each other as often as before.

"Life gets in the way," Huston told People. "Also, for some reason, they've been doing endless rerouting and road work near his house, so it takes hours to get to him, and that's always irritating. I always managed to be late going to see him, which is very irritating for him."

Recalling the incident to The Guardian in February, she said, "I was in a car with three dogs, two cats, and the housekeeper [evacuating the wildfires], and he called and asked if I was all right and if I had someplace I was staying."

Huston added, "That's the bottom line with he and I – when the chips are down, he's there."

Nicholson's son weighed in on the bond he shares with his father and how he has looked up to the "Shining" star.

"We're very different people; I was born in 1992, he was born in 1937. The things that affect me don't necessarily affect him. Obviously, I love him. He's my inspiration," Ray told Deadline in October 2024.

He continued, "I ate dinner with him every night. I studied it, that's how I learned to be a human being. So, of course, we're gonna be kind of similar."
